advice/suggestions on a scope

I'm new to this forum and predator hunting, I'm getting into coyote hunting because he seems like a real thrill and we can hunt coyotes year round with no limit and virtually any firearm... (can't beat that)

I recently bought a 7mm rem mag bolt action that I plan on using for deer and coyote and want to get as much bang for my buck as far as scopes do... I also plan on doing some night hunting so thee illuminated reticles really appeal to me...
The scopes I've been contemplating are made by Leapers but have heard mixed reviews on their ability to hold a zero and such... Seems like a great deal with all the features they offer but who cares if it won't hold a zero... Anyone have any opinions or reviews on these models?? I really like the zero-reset, illuminated reticle and fog and water proof features and I'd like to keep to a budget of $200 and under or so.

I don't know anything about "Leapers" scopes. But if I were putting a scope on a hard-hitter like a 7 mm mag, I would definitely look into something proven. I have gone the route of cheap scopes before and have been disappointed. For around $200, you could get a Bushnell Elite 3200 or a Leupold VX-1. If they have mixed reviews, especially about holding their zero, then I would not put it on a 7mm Mag (or anything for that matter). I will never buy another scope for any serious shooting from a company that does not offer a lifetime guarantee. I believe all Leupolds have a lifetime guarantee. Also, their customer service is great.

A limited budget?
Me too.

Keep it simple to get the most for your money.
Consider a plain vanilla 3-9x40 such as a Bushnell 3200, Burris FFII(non-B-Plex as a personal preference, especially since you mentioned night hunting), Leupold VX?, etc.. in that price range.

Don't pay a premium for an illuminated reticle, though it would be nice to hear more about your state's night hunting laws. If you can use lights forget the illuminated reticles.

Don't pay a premium for a 50mm objective lens.

Do not buy a scope with the oversized plastic parallax adjust knob. It will/may cause mounting issues. It is many times thicker than a conventional metal one.

Get a 3200 3-9 and enjoy....

yea there's no regs on night hunting yotes in Ohio except you must have a 360 degree visible light able to be seen from a quarter mile... I know its probably wishful thinking to get all the specs of a $1000 scope on a $200 scope and perform well...

If your on a budget check out Cabela's Pine Ridge scopes, reasonable prices and a hundred percent warrentee. Other than those the guys have given you good advice above.

Those scopes that ID mentioned are worth a look, I've heard lots of good, though I don't own one.

I wouldn't get too wound up in fancy (limited utility) features. Look at some of the most expensive scopes and they are relatively no-frills straight-forward utilitarian devices.

You don't need/want an AO on a 3-9x.

Unless p-dogs are in your immediate future you don't need more than 9x.

3x is a wonderful hunting setting. Great field of view, good viewing in low light, etc...

A plain duplex reticle is an awesome invention. If night hunting, the heavier the better.

well i fanally looked at a pine ridge the other day, and all i will say about them is that i will not be owning one ever. maybe the 3 i looked at were just out of the norm. bushnell 4200 3x9x40 265 optic zone that pretty hard do beat! lee

Well i did some research, those scopes I was looking at were for airsoft.... what the hell, those are a lil advanced for Airsoft!!! lol, I think I better go with a Leupold VX...

You could look into Pentax optics.... Theres a couple guys on here that have them and like it. Theres accually one for sale in the classifides right now.... I think im going to buy one for my AR when I get it and try one out. If it won't hold up to the AR Ill just put it on my .17 HMR or somthing.

Also you could try a Leupold from wally world. I bought the rifleman scope for 200 bucks on my .22-250 and its been fine for like 5 years.....

What is this all about? I didn't see anything in his post to get ruffled about /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

My vote goes to the Bushnell Elite 3200 series.

Another for the 3200. If you got a little extra coin, then the 4200.

If you hurry, you can likely still find those Browning badged 3200 scopes at Natchez. I bought one in 5-15 power just a couple of weeks ago. Man! What a bargain!

I recently bought a leapers scope like the one in your link, it came off my gun about as fast as I put it, on first 3 after I got in dialed in were within a half inch of eachother. Then I made one click to fine tune it and it moved point of impact 6 inches then the shots were just all over the place. I returned it and bought a burris 4.5-14x42. Night and day differece on the quality.

Rustydust thanks for posting that up, I just went about bout a 4-12X40 for my AR that I havn't ever bought yet. What a heck of a price...... I almost went for the 5-15 but thats a bit much for close range shooting with a 5 power.. I usually run 3 power for all my shooting, so 4power should be alright.

Heck of a deal on that, saved me almost 100 bucks

Damstrate! Someone on this forum (thank you!) posted about Natchez Shooter Supply (www.natchezss.com) having these on sale. They still have some 3-9 X 40 for $129.99. I have nothing to put one of these on and I want one anyway! I have bought many scopes over the last almost 4 decades. This has to be one of the best bargains out there. The 5-15 powers are all gone. Glad I got one when I did!
