I know some of you are going to say don't buy one, They are not enough for coyotes, Get a 22 mag, ect ect. But I still want one. I will use it on nothing larger than a rock chuck. What are some good rifle choice out there? Who makes a good auto? Has anyone shot the Taurus pump? Is the a good gun for under $200? Thanks for you help.

The HMR is a kick in the pants for the small varmints. I have personally been around the CZ, Marlin, and Savage. They all shot quite well and all fell in the $200-$325 range. It depends on what you want to spend, and what your after.

As far as a good auto, Volquartsen is mentioned as a top notch auto. Might be more than what you want to spend???

No experience with the Taurus you mention but if you are looking for a good gun under 200$ I will recommend you a Marlin 917V for 189.99 at most Walmarts or sporting goods stores. A true MOA gun with most reports of accuracy being closer to half-MOA. Another good choice is the Savage 93 which I believe is also under 200 depending on the model.

Both are very reasonable guns and it is all personal preference on which one you buy. Some seem to sway toward the Marlin because the Savage has a 'step up' where the barrel meets the action and the trigger seems to be slightly more prone to wobble side to side. Not sure if this was fixed on the cheaper model but I do know that the more expensive Savage models have the famed Accu-Trigger which is on alot of thier CF rifles.

As for an auto...Remington has the 597 in 17HMR I believe and last I heard Ruger was starting a market for an auto HMR. Take that as a grain of salt though as Im not sure on that one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Or you can go all out and buy a Volquartsen 17 auto but you will pay good for it.

I have three , Custom Cooper, Anschutz 1517, and Savage 93 all in Left Hand. I love the little 17 rimfire for varmints even tho i think it is to small for a primary yotes rifle. The 17 HMR is the most accurate rimfire ever produced with all my rifles shooting under a inch at 100 yard and just one little 17 cal hole at 50 yards. I personally hope the 17 HMR hangs on for the next 100 years. I have owned a number of the Taurus pumps when Rossi was making them and they shot very well but haven't tried the 17 version. The only bad thing about the pump , you are stuck with open sights which will limit you early in the morning and late evenings. You will like the 17 Rimfire. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i bought a savage 93 w/ the bull bbl. and wood stock. the wood wasnt much to look at so i painted it. put a mueller eraticator on it and absolutely love it.she shoots the 17gr. hornady's and the 20gr. xtp's under an inch at 100yds. and you can see the holes at 100yds with the scope set on 25x.
i also used it on tree rats last oct. youll definately want to use the 20gr. loads for controlled expantion on stuff you plan on eating.
great gun and very accurate.

I can't add much to the good advice you received above. I had the Taurus 17 pump and it is a nice shooting/operating gun but doesn't get the most out of the hummer.

My first hummer was the Ruger 77/17 and had to put another few hundred dollars in it to get it to shoot. Got irritated with in and somebody wanted it more then me. My next was a CZ 452 varmint that shot excellently with a $15 trigger spring. Then I bought a Marlin and put a Rifle Basix trigger in it and it shot excellently also. By excellently I mean groups under 3/4" at 100 yards. Then I went to a Rem 597, put a VQ hammer in it to improve the trigger and it shot excellently. The reason I jumped to the auto was for my main use on prairie dogs it was more fun. Had a NEF in there somewhere and it was also very good. I loved this caliber so much I finally sold all of the above and bought a VQ. Ruger never made a hummer auto and probably never will because of their legal department.

To get the most out of the hummer be sure to put a good scope on it of at least 16X.

The bottom line is that they all are capable of under 1" groups with a little modification. So just take your pick and be prepared to do a little modification to the trigger.

Thanks for all your help. I am psyched! I just bought a Savage 93 wood. I actually think it is not to bad looking. The wood has fairly nice figuring, except for the laser inlay of the Savage Chief. Put an old Leopold Vari-X-III 6.5-20 on top. I put a swag down the tube and was amazed how many metal fragments I got out. I spent 30 minuets cleaning the barrel, but it looks good now. I think it looks like a good gun for $164.00

sounds great, and you got a good deal on it too.
that must be a heck of a scope. you wont be sorry you went w/ higher magnification.

congratulations

Thanks Jamesdogk. It was cool, I took the scope off a gun I have not shot in 15 years, I already had the Wever rings. I had everything I needed except the gun. Tomorow I am going to blow up some coke cans and jack rabits. I need to figure out a good Cottontail Load that will not blow them up.

DudeHere, I checked out that sight, you right those guys are nuts about rim fire guns, there must be someting going on there, I have always considerd rim fire 22s a bit boring, and have always like my centerfires a lot better.
Thanks boys.

Salemdawger,

Samspade took the words right out of my fingers!
Congrads to you and as stated you will love the 17hmr.
I have a cz with brookies trigger ,i glassbedded the action, floated the barrel and have a 5.5x16 nikon scope on mine.
I killed some many varmints with it i couldn't count them all ,coyote, jackrabbit, crows, praire dogs, etc-etc..
My younger brother came over to visit one day and i heard some crows in the trees in the backyard.
I had the hmr laying ready in the back utility room and let him have the shot.125 yards to the trees he aims he squeezes and down comes a crow ,another one lands and follows the first one to the ground with a graping hole in each crows back.He gazed at the little hmr round and smiled. He said it's like a little high powered rifle------Yuup.ME

I have a Volquartsen Fusion in .17 HMR and .22 Mag. The .17 HMR barrel will shoot all six of the .17 HMR loads into 1/2 inch or better 5-shot groups at 100 yds combined. Some individual loads it likes will do better than that.
