Advise on using an EoTech

Rookie here in New York wondering if anyone uses an EoTech or similar sight with success. I'm stumped on what type of sight for my AR will do the the job but am leaning towards the EoTech for speed but wondering if the lack of magnification will lead to poor shot placement

Any thoughts and or advice would be very appreciated.

I've had one for 18 months. Best advice I can give is adjust the intensity down until it's barely visible. I'd estimate you can kill coyotes at 150 yards reliably, as I can shoot about a 4 inch group at that range.
If you have it blooming bright, the groups open up.
I also have a 4-12 Nikon Monarch in a one-piece mount I can swap onto the AR in a couple of minutes if I need long-range accuracy.
If you hunt where your shots are going to be fairly close and/or running shots, the EOTech is going to be the way to go.

Practice shooting the EO-Tech with both eyes open. The EO-Tech and most other red dot type optics only reach their full potential when used with both eyes...Just check to insure that the eye you are using for the sight is your 'dominant' eye..

Dot Optics are designed, primarily, for Close Quarter Combat and 1 MOAs have a functional limitation of about 125yds, depending on the dot size.. Handgun dot optics usually have a 4 MOA dot and are limited to about 40yds...

I use one when I think my most likely shots will be within the 100yd range, if I think it will likely be farther I switch over to a 2-7x red dot scope.. both units have
Quick Detach mounts, so it only takes about 20-30 seconds and I don't have to worry about my 'zero'.

As far as shot placement, that can only be determined by your ability and the amount of solid practice you can put yourself through. In competitions, I've hit bowling pins at 100yds using my EO-Tech, but they were not the majority of my targets (nor did I usually get them on the first shot), or I would have switched over to the scope..The rest of them were in the 15-45yd range and it was not a real problem...

You can easily add magnification to the Eotech with the 3x or 4x flip to side magnifier. If weight is an issue the 3x magnifier is much lighter than than the 4x.

All sounds good to me. I was torn, but given all of your input I will go go with the Eotech. If I were located out west where long range shots are available I would go with a scope. Here in my area of NY, the hunting areas are mostly heavy brush with clearings giving me about 100-150 yards max.

Thanks Much guys, Looking Forward To My First One.

An Aimpoint Micro T-1 only weighs a few ounces and will run about a gazillion hours on one battery. It might be worth looking at. 4MOA dot, I have heard good things about these.

+1 for the Micro T-1
I love mine, I have had it on for over a year not on either setting number 5 or 7 still going strong

The EOTech is going to work like a champ in those conditions, without magnification. Just keep the intensity low so it doesn't "bloom" and it outshoots peep sights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The EOTech was made for close quarters combat "CQB" and it works great at shorter distances. If you plan on shooting out past 100 to 150 yards you may want to use a scope. If you stick with the EOTech definately shoot will both eyes open and the intensity on low. One other thing to remember is that if the rifle lays motionless for a while with the EOTech turned on the unit will automaticly turn it's self off to save your battery. You will then have to turn it back on and adjust the intensity before you can shoot. This could cause you a missed shot opportunity. It is a great unit if it meets your needs. Good luck.

I've never heard that motion has anything to do with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
If you push "down arrow" initially, it stays on 4 hours, if you push "up arrow" it stays on 8 hours. That's how I understand it. At lunch time, turn it off and back on using "up arrow" and you should be okay.
