Aerial coyote hunt planned north of Seligman

03/20/2003

SELIGMAN (AP) -- The Arizona Game and Fish Department is planning a coyote hunt in northern Arizona.

The hunt will be done from the air and will be conducted north of Seligman, either later this month or early April, Game specialist Johnny Mills said.

It will coincide with the time antelope are giving birth.

The hope is that by eliminating some of the predators, the fawns will be given a chance to grow up and join their dwindling herds, Mills said.

With continued growth, the drought and the lack of vegetation, the hunt is necessary to ensure the herds continue, he said.

What a great "IDEA",to bad the so called G&F biologists didn't do this a few years back in Region 3,when they still had some Antelope left
in Unit 10.

Just not that long ago in Unit 10,area N. of Seligman,Az.G&F put out 160 Buck Antelope tags, last Season, this once BEST in the state unit had 20 tags for Rifle hunters.

With to many years of "Overhunting"/to many "TAGS"and NO PREADATOR CONTROL by the State,it seems a little late.

I just returned from a "YEARLY" coyote hunt that is based from Seligman and sponsored by Mohave Sportsman Club out of Kingman,Az.The 2 day hunt is known as "ANTELOPE EATERS".It was attended by 125 teams this year,Mar. 8-9.The weather was Beautifull for CALLING,but only 44 coyotes were taken. This was the third Calling event this year/Spring in area N. of Seligman. At the check in on Sun.Region 3 Biologist,Tim Pender was present and said no more tags would be cut to save a few more Buck Antelope.

With no "Fawn Recruitment"and still to many tags for what is still left after each hunt Season, its to bad the State didn't start this "Great Idea" before lets say "The barn doors open and all the horse got out"so know lets close it/"Aireal GUNNING COYOTES"--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

azbiggame,

I love your thoughts. It seems like the G&F is always 3 years behind on what needs to happen. I guess anything that gets done has to go through so many layers that by the time it is approved it's too late.

I feel the same way about the elk herd in the White Mountains. We are killing too many cows and not killing off the freak horned bulls. In 15 years it might be better to draw in Colorado than Arizona if things keep going.
