This is posted for Africa Predator. Now, that Leopard is what I call a predator! Seems that Fox Pro works most anywhere. Nice going Gary.

Leopard female called with 416B. Dark skies, Namibia

Pretty cool.
Whats that on the end of the barrel?

Its a can (silencer).

That is one of my dream hunts up there. If I ever go to Africa, that is the primary target animal on my list.
Nice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I am leaving again on Thursday for a predator hunt for the normal stuff and also plan to target leopard, have been killing far to much stock on the farm so need to concentrate a little on them.

Will take some pictures over the 4 days, we are hunting 3 trucks and we will call on our own. Will sweep about 25,000 hectares in 4 days. Looking forward to it.

That jackal lying on his back in that one picture looks just like a coyote, they have lovely fur but thats about as far as nice goes when talking about a jackal!

Here is a little info on him and amounts they kill. Estimate they kill 685-000 sheep a year.

http://karoo3.agric.za/news/reports/research2005/ResearchReport_2005.htm#20

Although individual cases of extremely high livestock losses occur, the extent of the predator problem appears not to be a general threat to small stock production in South Africa. Data collected so far indicate that predators kill approximately 5% of all lambs. Nonetheless, extrapolating the data collected in this study indicate that approximately 685 000 sheep and goats to the value of R300 million are annually killed by predators.

I wanted a jackyl so bad when I went to RSA this past june and then I airballed the only one I got a shot at. Possibly because I was thinking about the 2 rhinos a few dozen yards to my left.

Congrats! Which calls did you use on the leopard and jackals? Was the Leopard over bait and calling or calling only (i'm just curious on technique). 2008 may be my year for Africa

Good hunting!

Silencers are available here no problem, thats a 22 Hornet rifle. Whenever I hunt Namibia Francois and myself and his brothers all use a Hornet for those smaller critters. But for bigger ones well thats another story.

The photo with 4 of us you can see that same rifle, shot those jackal with a pig squeal. In that area we used vultures to find dead carrion, and jackals watch vultures to locate food also, the area has many "VLAKVARK" "Warthogs"also so we use a pig sound, and it works well.

Huff, when you hunted here who was your PH? I always say guys who come to South Africa must be careful who they book through as on the PH courses here I know about nothing is covered about predation and calling extensively, but the people qualify as professionals, this trade most of us learn ourselves. To me its like saying you are a dentist and can do fillings, crowns and everything but cannot extract a tooth, then you aint no dentist.

It is important to book with a guy who is knowledgable in calling jackal and cats, its easier callng a jackal than a cat, many guys call for years and never call a lynx, some guides say they have. So be warned when coming to hunt predators in SA, get references.

I enjoy calling cats more than jackal, they are elusive and harder to figure out, but getting the basics right will get you some.

Many areas in SA are far busier than others, most action here is FREE STATE regions, simply over run with vermin.

Who was your guide?

Beagler - you ever been here? good times to be had for sure! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

ras5 98 that pic of Leopard was taken with a cellphone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Man I love those jackals furs, amazing coats for sure, trully a stunning coat, but thats as far as it goes when using the word stunning to describe a jackal, they are bad news. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I wish we could use suppressors here to hunt. Or at least make them more accessable. No more ringing ears! Or at least no more hearing protection.

We can use them here in Pa. to hunt but you must go through the normal paperwork, background check and $$ for ATF permit and approval....

We use silencers here for heavier calibres when teaching guys to shoot on courses, it reduces recoil.

That 22 Hornet has such a heavy recoil that we need a silencer also, man its quite scary /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
