Aftermarket .17 Remington barrels

Hey Guys

Well, sad news. It is time for me to replace the factory tube on my .17 Rem with something else. A few thousand rounds of 20 and 25 grain Vmax (mostly) bullets have finally taken its toll. Tsk. Oh well.

So even though you are few in number those of you that have gone with a custom .17 barrel for your build or replacement what did you end up with and, more importantly, how well did it turn out? Shoot them bug holes? I am leaning for a Lilja but just wanted to know what everyone has and how much you like them and for sure if you would buy another.

Congrats!

Lilja gets my vote. For the vanilla .17 Rem. and not heavier than 25's, make mine a 10 twist, too.

I am going to be using the 20 and 25 grain bullets almost exclusvily. And Lilja has the 1-9" 27" barrels in stock. Factory varmint contour as well. How's that sound, Dave? You go for that?

For an in-stock barrel, I wouldn't quibble over the 9 twist. Gives you the option to shoot 30's, if you want, too.

I'll add as a P.S...

My personal opinion, the .17 Rem is better with the 25's than 30's. Loses some of it's secret sauce with the 30's, just not quite enough boiler room to make the magic happen!

That is ONLY my opinion though!

Well folks, my Visa card just got abused a bit more. Got a Lilja headed my way. Talked to a very nice young lady named Melony there and got it ordered. Kinda hate to spend the $ right before Christmas but they got them now and may as well. By the time my favorite gunsmith gets the barrel and does his finishing magic to it winter will be here and wont get a chance to shoot it much anyway. But for those of us that adore the .17 calibers it is, after all, what we do to keep shooting. Hopefully this will be the last one that I buy for many years.

Yeah, I noticed that you have it a thumbs up on Sauber.com so hey, the more people that like it makes me feel good about ordering me one.

It is not going to be my primary varminter as its limitations are mainly the killing power at long range. But they WILL kill a 450 yard prairie dog and a 550 yard ground squirrel as I found out. And that's plenty good enough for me.

I've consistently killed coyotes in the 300-400 yard range with my 17s

I have a 9t green mountain bbl in a ar that I chambered in 17/223 that I'm impressed with. For only $90.00.it shoots better than I can.

You made a wise choice.

Well thanky! That's one reason that I enjoy this place so much. With all of the collective bits of wisdom on hand it sure helps when trying to make a decision. Especially one that involves money. Much better than eenie meenie miney moe.
