Has any one else out there had a hard charging predator actually come in contact with your body. I've seen it happen on three different occasions.
First was when I was calling with my brother Merle ("1 Shot" on this board). He was calling and I was in the shooter's position covering his backside. This coyote come trotting in and sits down like 2 feet behind him. I could not shoot for safety reasons and about the time I was going to holler at him that one was right behind him, the coyote lifted up on his back legs and put his two front paws right on his shoulder blades. I think he most have thought he was a rock or something and was going to look over the top of him. After a lot of gunfire the coyote was finally killed.
Second was with my friend Bing. He was calling and kind of leaning on this big flat boulder and I was the shooter sitting in a little rimrock ridge behind him again covering his back door. This coyote comes in on a dead run from Bing's seven o'clock position and runs right up his back! He had his front two paws on Bing's cap and his back two paws on Bing's lower back. Bing screamed as he stood up to knock the coyote off his back and then killed him on the second shot with his shotgun. He had him made into a life sized mount and we called the mount "Four Paws".
Third time was when I took my friend Jimmy from work out calling. I had taken him once before and we had only seen two coyotes in 2 days. So I waited until the coyotes were thick one year and took him back again. We called in 23 coyotes in 21 calls that day with the last call being the most exciting. We were on flat ground covered with sage brush and Jimmy was doing the calling. I was again downwind of Jimmy covering his backside. This coyote was coming straight at Jimmy from the 12 o'clock position but Jimmy was looking off to his side as he was panning back and forth. About the time Jimmy made eye contact with the coyote, the coyote was already airborne jumping the sage bush that Jimmy was sitting behind. Jimmy stood up to deflect the coyote and as he did the coyote's teeth got hooked an Jimmy's watch and broke the band. No flesh wounds, only the broken watch band. I have never seen anyone who's eyes were as big or mumbling as much as Jimmy was after that. He did get him killed with his shotgun though.
In all these cases I don't think they were trying to come in contact, they were either just stupid or racing other coyotes to the wounded rabbit call. All were during years when the coyote numbers were way up. Any one else got some stories about actual contact?
