Aimpoint CompML2 with Aimpoint 3x magnifier - your opinion for coyote?

I have an 16" AR-15 with a 4 MOA dot Aimpoint CompML2 that I would like to set up for use in coyote hunting. The problem for me with the red dot alone in this role is that a coyote does a pretty good job of blending into the background. I would like some magnification to give me a better sight picture. Sight picture is also an issue at dawn and dusk.

My main concerns are:

1. How does the Aimpoint 3x/Comp ML2 combination do in low light?
2. Would the field of view be too narrow for tracking and quickly finding a moving target?

Based on your experience, is this a bad idea?

I think that is an awesome combo! GG&G make a quick release mount for the 3x magnifier - so instead of bringing in two guns (a shotgun) just like everyone else does - all you have to do is twist your 3x and it will pop right off and you can shoot fast at close range.

Over several years I've used an Aimpoint 5000 with a one minute dot. It started life out on a Ruger MKII target auto and now resides on a Mossberg 835 turkey gun. For use at closer ranges it works great, but for target work or coyotes I really like a scope with cross hairs better. Perhaps it's just my old eyes or perhaps I've used a scope for two many years, but for ranges from 100 yards to 400 plus yards I've found the scope far better.

I am not familiar with the aimpoint. I have seem an AR gun with a scope and a bushnell Holosight. The guy would use the scope for longer shots and the Holosight which was mounted on the side of the scope for close or multiple targets. I know the holosight is bright and you wont loose the dot. It looked like a pretty sweet set up.

+1 on that. Good, sound advice from Bob. (as usual) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Unless all your calling is in tight country where everything that responds is going to be close, I think a fella might be limiting the potential of his AR or any rifle by choosing a red dot scope with it's low magnification. You could probably get by but there are better choices I would think. Just my opinion though. If it works for you, more power to you.

Good hunting

I have been calling coyotes for over thirty years. For a calling rifle I have used 2-7, 3-9, 4-12, Leupold's VX-1's run
$200.__$250. The price is right and there darn good scope's.

I'm going to put together a similar rig by the time I start chasing coyotes again. I'm gonna use Eotech optics though. They make a 1 MOA dot and their magnifier has an option of a flip to side mount. I got pretty tired of trying to decide whether to haul my shotgun or rifle to a stand only to have taken the wrong one or hauling both and be holding the wrong one at the moment of truth. I'm hoping (and spending a lot of money) that this will be a solution to the problem. If not, keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds next fall. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jimanaz, this is my exact situation. I hunt brushy desert areas. Visibility can be very long or very short. I have had shots on coyotes at 2 yards to 200 yards.

I went ahead and ordered the 3X magnifier. I will post on my findings in a month or so.

Same deal here. I hunt in thick desert areas. My aimpoint works well but lacks at the 200yd range. Larue makes an excellent swing mount for the magnifier.

I was going to do the same thing as you until I found the new Burris XTR that is true 1x to 4x.
