Air rifle?

Can a air rifle take down a ground hog? The reason I ask is I got some new farm land this year to hunt with a lot of ground hogs. On one side is a golf course & there is houses all over this area. Somebody told me to use an air rifle. Will an air rifle work if so what should I look for that can get the job done that is inexpensive. I have never used or looked into buying an air rifle before.
Thanks jeff

The air rifles that would reliably do that job are all expensive(600.00 minimum!) You'll need at least 22 cal. or larger,900 fps, or faster....and accurate! I favor PCP rifles with shrouded barrels for sound reduction.
Good luck!

As long as you take no "on the horizon" shots, there are
plenty of bullets in .17 or .204 that will dissentigrate
and not glance at all.

an airgun in .177 will take a ground hog just fine, but yo need to keep shot placement to head only
a .22 is better as it holds energy better
check out this gun
it is a hammer and accurate
and you can even get it in .25 cal
but .22 has a lot better pellet selection

and for the price it comes scoped ready to shoot
its hard to beat this gun for a hunting gun
and this will anchor a Groundhog, Coon, Fox quite easily and quietly

Lot's of folks hunt groundhogs with air guns. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get one that will work either.

The Benjamin Trail is an excellent choice. It is on my "want" list of air guns to own.

For the money though, a Techforce 89 from Compasseco is very good as well. You can get an 89 for $127 dollars. I got one for Christmas and I love it. I can put most shots in the same hole at close range and it groups under an inch out to 35 yards.

The hunting section of the GTA Air Gun forum has lots of pictures and stories about folks hunting groundhogs with air guns.

Again, i agree with Atch, there was even a guy who dropped a coyote at 20 yards with an 89 posted a few weeks ago. Not saying it should be done, but the right pellet in the right place can drop them. If you want a repeater, and like to tinker, may I recommend an RWS 850? 8 shot, uses airsource cartridges, and are making good power after a tune up. Not ar15 moddable, but the tinkerer with tools can get some good speed out of it. You can find them used, with lead dust collectors for around $200-$250.
