does anyone hunt with an AK-47? i have one and shot a yote at 7 yards, but don't know if it will work at long range. Does anyone know where to get a Scope mount that mounts on the side rail?
I hunt with an AK-47 in 223. It has a Russian Kobra red dot sight system on it. I find it to be very accurate, The safety selector on the AK is the worst hunting safety I've encountered. The 30 rd. Magazine is way to long to comfortably use on a stand I use the 10 rd. magazine. and Winchester 45 gr. HP's. When I finish a stand I put in a 30 rd. Mag. with import or surplus ammo. and make a big wide sweep as I'm walking back to the rig. I'm always hoping to jump a couple of Jackrabbits. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
oops, forgot to answer your second question.
Scope mount for an AK-47, in my opinion, such as it is, the best scope mount for a AK-47 is the

If you have a european Ak it will already have a
reciever side mounting plate on it. If you have a Chinese or Bulgarian AK you will need to have a gunsmith mount a side mount plate on your reciever.
Don't go hunting with one of those reciever lid mounts. They don't hold zero and all you will accomplish is to scare Mr. Coyote.
I've have not hunted with the AK I have. I've shot it enough at paper though to agree with Robb and Merle. I feel it would be plenty accurate for calling if I kept my shots around 100-150 yards. People I know that have the model Merle has, have reported even better accuracy than the 7.62x39 model if I remember right.
Hi Guys, I haven't used a AK, I own a SKS in 7.62x39. I have taken a few coyotes with this gun. Two were nite shots with a mag lite duct taped to the bottom of the barrel(I breed dogs and the coyotes come close at nite). Both were taken off hand at about 75 yds. The AK and SKS are almost the same gun. If yours is about the same as mine with accurate shots consisting of 2 1/2" to 3" groups. I have also played with 55 grain saboted rounds out of this gun with fun results on ground squirrels. If nothing else, they are cheap to shoot. You can pick up 1000 rounds for less than $100. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I would not use it on anything past the 150-200 range. Have you checked what kind of groups your AK is shooting? Are you interesten in reloading for it? Reloading is a better bet for finding that sweat spot and getting better groups. Good luck

PS. oh, I forgot. I have a 3-9X40 scope mounted to this thing. I built the scope mount. Don't use the cover plate mount. The top cover plate can move around just enough to piss you off. I'll post a picture of this rig when I get home.
