AK-47 for coyotes?

I'm considering the purchase of an AK, for hunting coyotes.

* Does anyone use an AK for coyotes?
* Why did you choose this weapon, for coyotes?
* What are the pros and cons to hunting with an AK?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

I think the biggest problem would be mounting an optic on the rifle. I don't know if things have improved since I had an AK, but the scope mount I put on it would loosen up enough after 5-6 rounds to throw it off zero. I got so frustrated with it that I threw it away. Sold the AK not too long after.

I had the same experience as Kingzero.....and am just curious why you're thinking about the AK as a platform for a calling rifle?

If you're dead set on the 7.62X39 cartridge, maybe an SK might be a better choice.....

There are so many decent entry level AR-15 rifles out there, that it's difficult for me to imagine that the AK is a good choice, but hey....."different strokes for different folks" as Sly and the Family Stones always said!

Vartarg217,
I'm not convinced that it is a good platform, for a calling rifle. Therefore, my posting this question. I've owned a RRA A4 and was not impressed with the lack of knock down power, so I purchased a Savage in .25-06. The quarter bore puts 'em down with authority.

When calling, I use a 3" 12 gauge Mossberg 500 with Dead Coyote ammo and a Carlson's .680" restriction...as my front weapon. The .25-06 is sitting beside me, on a bipod...in case something thinks it's out of range.

I was just curious as to the effectiveness of an AK, as it would hit harder than an AR. Open sights would be used.

My pops owns one and off of bags and a bench idk if I could hit a truck an elk at 100.. Def not a coyote.

Maybe an AR in 7.62X39, 6.8, or something like that.. Since you have the lower you could just grab an upper and be on your way.

Really? For coyotes? .223? Really? About how many coyotes did you shoot with the AR to get this impression?

A .223 normally flattens out coyotes pretty good for me. Strange how it works great for some and not so great for others.

I would imagine your 25-06 does put em down with authority as long as you hit em good. Good luck.

I'm with blopez50 go with a 7.62X39 upper, with some good handloads you should be set to go.

I have to agree with all the other comments on the AK, just don't see you being happy with the accuracy of it,in the end.

If you are 300 yards or less the 6.8 should give you all the authority you need for a coyote. You could just get an upper to pin to that RRA lower and be done with it.

Around my neck of the woods. The dogs are big we have to use a 300 win or bigger just to bring them down. Anything any smaller is just askin to get ya eatin!!!!!!

I wasn't fond of the trigger slap on my AK-47. With Wolf ammo and a scope mount that was part of the top cover, I got decent accuracy but nothing I'd feel confident hunting coyotes with.

I would shot a 30-30 lever gun for yotes before I hunted with a AK.
Do yo still have the Ar-15?
If you do I would get a upper in 6.8 SPC or the 25x45.

Every ak I've seen on the net shoots submoa out to 1000, and never fails. What's not to like?

Every one I've actually been around, not so much. Id take an ar in 223 any day of the week.

Seriously,
I've never pulled the trigger on a coyote with my AK (not that I couldn't have) but
I've taken deer out to 200 yds with an Yugo AK47 underfolder using Remington 129gr corelokt soft points. All have been one shot kills with very little tracking necessary. No scope, just the irons. I spent time at ranges out to 300 yds zeroing in my AK and sampling various factory loads and the Remington had the best results in my American mfg. barrel(Green Mountain). Ok not MOA @ 100 yds but a respectable 2 to 3" I was able to get. Good enough for deer and certainly good enough for yotes. I think practice and finding out what works for your set up is the key. There are a few good quality optic mounts for AK's (Ultimak) that lend well for red dot optics and maybe even a long eye relief pistol scope. Triggers can be improved just don't expect too much. Yes, there are much better options for predator hunting, but if it's all you got or you are up for the challenge of hunting with your AK47 then give it a chance you might be pleasantly surprised.
