I don't know the differences between these two rifles....or is there a difference? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Could someone explain and/or show a link about them?

Your opinions and experiences are appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

AK47 chambers for the 7.62x39 while the newer AK74 chambers for the newer round 5.45x39.

The AK74 is also shorter, has a folding stock and comes with a cone muzzle brake. It looks really cool and is probably easier to control in full auto fire than its older sister due to the smaller bullet.

I've often wonder how accurate that round would be in a bolt action rifle.

Howard Nguyen,
I have a couple of questions:

Isn't there a .223 chambering also? If so, of the 3 different calibers, which would be best? When I say "best" I'm refering to functional reliability and accuracy.

When you say "shorter", do you mean overall length or barrel length?

mine are the same size, but different chamberings and magazines. the 74 has a plastic orange colored mag and is chamber in 5.45x39. a sub-22 caliber shooting a bullet weeighing 62 grains. against the makers wished USSR adopted the 5.45 as a replacement for the 7.62. The round is a rough copy in ballastics to the 223, but with a couple hundred feet of velocity given up. Function is identical, and the only visable difference seems to be in the barrel. A few years ago there was a brief import of east german snipers chambered for this round. I had one for awhile and it wasn't the greatest thing in the world, the stock was clumsy but the trigger was wonderful. it came with a mounted scope and the accuracy was in the 1-1.5" range at 100. thats the only other gun i'm aware of in the 5.45 chambering. Ammo is available and not to expensive.

I think the biggest difference is ammo availability, 7.62x39 is easy to find, 223 is easy to find, both are popular calibers and are going to be around and easily available for the foreseeable future. The 5.45 is harder to find ammo for, and it won't get better, IMHO it will probably be even harder to find in the future.
