Bubba1, I feel your pain... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif,, I'm not the most successful hunter for several reasons, so my advice is limited...but I have a lot of the same problem.. If I get one to come anywhere close, he nails me before I nail him.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.. I just need to get smarter...Ours get shot at a lot by farmers, bird & deer hunters, and are pretty skittish...Most of our good land is already tied up in hunting leases..
I'm now at the point of cruising the area at night with an old siren, just to see if they are still in the area and I can get a response (Be sure to let your local sheriff's office know what you are doing in case they get any calls on you).
I pull down on a section of road bordering the area I'm interested in and shut of the vehicle and fire up the siren for about 15-20 seconds and then shut it off and listen for howling responses...If they are around, I'll hear them. We can't hunt at night, so I have to return during daylight hours and see if I can coax one out... Just not hit the same spots too often.
The only other thing is, don't get discouraged and keep trying as well as different approaches...Lots of patience and sooner or later it will work.. I finally got me a decoy and maybe that will help..
Read a lot of the Techniques section on the main page for the forum and the Prey section... All answers are not there, but enough ideas and approaches that you can get some ideas to try... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
The following is a quote from the first of the "Prey" section and I have to keep it in the front of my mind every time I go out...
Quote:
The coyote, Mr. canis latrans, is the number one target of the predator caller. For what it's worth, I think the coyote is the most intelligent animal on the face of the earth. Depending on just whom you talk to. . . some people hate this animal, while others like myself, think of him as a magnificent creature worthy of the highest respect. Given half a chance, this crafty critter can make a fool out of the most experienced caller on the planet, let alone someone new to the sport of calling.
