Alaska Coyote Population

Alaskan Wolfer

Howdy fellow Alaskans, By golly, I have been having a tough time finding a song dog this year. Granted, I haven't been spending as much quality time afield as I have in years past but there sure seems to be fewer coyotes around. What do y'all think? I cut only about one set of fresh tracks /day around here on average. Last year was similar maybe a bit better, but there for a few years, I would see more coyotes in an average day than I see tracks now. Do coyotes cycle with the bunnies like the lynx do? AW

Yoties are more of a oppertunist (sp?), if they must hunt to kill, they will, but in my eyes, why work your tail off for food if you don't have to? I don't think they cycle like the Linx do. A Lynx's primary food is the rabbitt, but a yotie will eat just about anything he can hunt/kill/scrounge up. Here's a thought AW. We valley folk up here have been hit with a ton of snow this year, the moose are congragating up in herds as we speak. I would try to find a concentration of moose this time of year and see what kind of tracks are lyin around. Also, what about road kills! I know you guy's have been hammered down there, just as we up here. Go check out gut piles. From what I have herd from a fish and feathers buddy of mine, there is no shortage of coyotes in the state of alaska. He told me we could wipe a whole slough of these critters out and not even touch the population. I said "well that's easy for you to say, you fly 20-30hrs a week for work just looking around." He say's there are alot of critter's to be had and don't give up. He did tell me a couple of little secretes of places to check out. A little far for you, but none the less he did say the kenai area is a great place for wolves and yotes. It takes time to find that "honey hole". I myself will continue to search until I find it and procede to shootin! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good Luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
