Alaska Hunting Permits?

Well you Alaskans seem to be a little slow this year. How did you fellas do on the permit drawings? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I was lucky enough to draw a cow permit in my back yard. Which is a great thing with gas prices. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Be safe,
Todd

PS. Curt you still have my book. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Missed again on copper river buffalo! That was really the only permit I wanted. Forgot to put in my tier II application. Thought I had with the other. Oh well! I've still got more big game hunts on my plate then I have time for.

Enjoy that cow permit.

No permits here. Too busy working a zillion hours. Freezer is still full from last year and all fish from Chitina. Enjoy the permits. Next year I'll go for the Delta Buffalo and Sheep.

Hey John how have ya been doing? Keep'in busy I suppose.

Well you know how that permit thing works....10 years of appling and bam I get ONE.

Yeah I also missed on a sheep permit for the tma in the winter draw. Figures as I'm building a cabin in the area and I can see sheep from it. I plan on a couple of sheep hunts out of the tma if the old legs let me. One is less the 1/2 hour away the other will be in early oct down in the park.

Didn't really hit the calling as much last winter as normal. Did about as much here as down chitna way. Not real sure way but I must have been busy or the weather sucked... oh yeah now I remember most of my call area burned up and there wasn't much of anything living around. Should be better this year. Did have a nice black wolf try and take a piece out of me when I was out thanksgiving day. He was a bit mad.

Good to hear from Alaskans. No permits for me. My kids both got goat tags. I'd like to see prefernce points issued up to a max of 5 pts like they do in Colorado. Someone told me yesterday that Larry Csonka just moved up to Anchorage and drew a Delta Bison and a Kodiak Browny. That seems a little corrupt to me. Maybe I'm just a little annoyed that I never seem to get a tag.

I didnt put in this year. Its been a pretty big waste of money for any member of my family to apply for a permit. My dad has tried for 20 years to get one, me at least 10, and nothing! However, my dads freind gets at least one permit a year like clockwork? Larry Zsonka drew 2 of the hardest tags to get in the same year! Something just aint right with our system. I will no longer give them my money until they fix it.

Good luck todd. You probably wont need it since you are lucky enough to get chosen to be on the list. Your affiliation with Law Enforcement didnt have anything to do with it hmmm.... LOL!

HomerAdam:
I worked for IBM for 31 years and maintained the mainframe that drew the hunting permits. I could make the computer draw any number on the planet but its a lot more complicated than that. I was an avid sheep hunter and would sleep with the devil to get a permit but then there was no way it could be done or I would of done it.
I drew one sheep permit in 15 years legitimitly and it was extremely difficult to convince my hunting buddies it was done straight up. It would be a lot easier to scam half of the state budget and buy a Marco Polo sheep.

Hey Matt,

I kinda feel the same way you do. In ten years I have drawn two permits, but I have a buddy that gets 1-3 a year. I'm good for at least $30+ a year. So that would make this about a $400 Moose.

So which two did the big fella get drawn for.

Todd

I've only drawn drawing permits a few times. Once was for bison (I was unsuccessful).

I've got a Tier II caribou permit for the Nelchina, as does the wife. I also got a cow permit for the Matanuska Valley North.

I've been out twice so far. Both times I was more a mechanic than a hunter. Had to jury-rig the Argo back both times.

Both times I/we was/were caribou hunting. The first time I saw hundreds, but they were all cows. Time 2 I saw nothing but new trail.

I have no problems with "the system". I apply, and I get permits.

I apply wholesomely.

You guys take care.

(P.S., Todd: The truck's running great.)

Hey Mark good to hear from ya. Well at least your out hunting right?

I'm glad to hear the truck is still running, and I'm still kicking my own butt for selling it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

We ought to get together for some hunt'in or at least breakfast one day.

Be safe,
Todd

PS Matt you never answered my email.

I'm not sur what you're complaining about (other than not getting drawn). I don't believe that Csonka "lives" here, but I do believe he owns a condo in Anchorage. If you consider that his TV show runs for 14-15 week a season, it only makes sense for him to have a local base to operare out of - that or own an airline.
I don't believe either of the two tags mentioned are reserved for residents - right? Nothing to keep a non-resident from having an equal chance to drawing as you or I do.
I too think our drawing system should be revamped to give credit for years applied, but not drawn, but don't think it'll happen.
The best advice I can give anyone who hasn't drawn a tag is to GIVE UP and stop applying - it'll improve my odds /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
