Albuquerque, New Mexico Hunting?

Just found out I will soon be transfered from Idaho to Albuquerque to open a new rehab center and I'm worried about my hunting options there. How is it for coyotes and rabbits?
Cost wise, I think out of state big game is out of the question but I thought I saw that birds cost $90. My favorite birds to hunt are ducks and chukars which I don't think I am going to find there. How about quail?
How far out do you have to drive to get into some descent hunting country? I have heard good things about NM but after 28 years in the same hunting areas I am a little worried. Any input would be great and make the transfer a little easier.

Oxnam, I'm sure some others will give you some good info, but if you will send a PM to BillyTheKid down at Carrizozo, NM, he can give you some great background on the potentials..

Great coyote hunting right out your back door.....unfortunately the discharge of firearms has been banned in the entire county!

Albuquerque is largely hemmed in by military and indian reservations to the East, North and West. That being said there is tons of public land in this state and lots and lots of predators to be had. Just going to have to drive a little to get to them.

So would the coyote hunting be really good near the city if I used a bow because of the lack of rifle pressure? Just to get an idea, would you expect to drive an hour or two to get to where you can hunt with a firearm?

Quite a few hunters in the Abq area as well as all over NM.
We do have a ton of BLM, forest and state trust lands.
Had some coworkers get there firearms confiscated for discharging them in Sandoval county so be carefull there. Bernalillo county can be just as bad. You will have to drive a bit unless you know a landowner. You can bowhunt in the Sandias just watch out for all the hikers.

We had 105 teams at last years Sportsman's Challenge. Very popular sport in NM.

If you make it further south (about 3 hours) send me a PM and we'll hit 'em in the desert. Lots of BLM land down here, and plenty of coyotes. You can hunt them on any non-resident license (so the $90 small game works), but you can't keep the fur or hunt fox/bobcats. To do that you'll need the $300 furbearer license.

Dove hunting can be quite good in September, and quail season runs from November 15 to February 15. I understand there is some decent duck hunting south of Alb, and a fella can hunt geese and apply for the crane hunts. I'm not sure what prices are on cranes for non-residents. You should be able to find plenty of jack rabbits across the state also.

I am starting to think this move won't be so bad after all. I have always wanted to get into an area with a lot of jackrabbits to practice with my recurve. Thanks for the input.

I am in Alamogordo which is about 5 hours south but pretty much all of NM has great coyote and rabbit hunting. I know my area has good amounts of coyote's, bobcats, and a TON of jacks and cottontails. I know more up north you start getting a lot of PD's as well.

Pretty good hunting all over NM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I stick to South of Alamogordo usually.
(familiar with the country there too.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
