All around dog

Drothauer- I think that is how you spell it. Like a German wire Hair but generaly have better breeding, and i have a freind who has one that will run rabbits fair.

Seems to me like I read about a German Drathaar, or Draathar, dog that was supposed to be a good all around dog. Looked like a German Short Hair to me, so they could be an offshoot breed of them.

Interesting thread you have going here. I've enjoyed reading the comments. By far the best dog I've ever owned is a LLewellen Setter, which is an offshoot of the English Setter. The breed is much lower to the ground, and their actions are all together different. When working birds their tail wags quite a bit, but when they get birdy it starts to spin. Then, when they go on point they get real low to the ground. Love to watch them work, and they are tireless. - Bill

Kind of a silly question, but would a Lab be good for quail, as well as dove & waterfowl? I'm looking at getting a pup in the next few weeks to start working for next year, and the Lab seems to be getting top marks overall. Dad breeds Irish Setters, and unfortunately for me, doesn't have a litter this year. So, that means I've got to go shell out $$$ on something else, and Labs seems to have a good rep.

Can't believe no one has suggested a Springer Spaniel which is a true flushing breed. Most of the dogs mentioned are pointing dogs and although they will flush game they are not suppose to and it is not the reason most people breed them. Springers are great on pheasants because pheasants like to run rather than stay in one place and that is why flushers make excellent pheasant dogs. I would not fault Labs either as they are flushers also and one of the best breeds around for retrieving. I don't know about labs but springers are also good rabbit dogs. A springer in good hunting shape will hunt hard all day, all weekend. They are also good family dogs, intelligent and easy to train.

For quail I would go with a German Shorthair Pointer or Wirehair Pointer rather than a Lab although I would give it to the Lab on waterfowl and water work.

We don't get frozen rivers like you guys up North do but, my GSPs do it all.....I've had labs and loved them but for the all purpose dog the German Shorthair is the way to go.

Hi, A well bred German shorthair is great. I have a neighbor that has bred and sold them for about 25 years with a waiting list here and a few other countries. However very cold water can be a problem. For that I have another neighbor that breeds German longhair pointers. He has written some magazine articles and has been featured in one magazine as a breeder of the line here in the US. They spend a lot of money sending dogs back and forth to Germany for breeding.
