Alliant Powders

I am unfamiliar with Alliant powders for the most part, but have seen that many are having good results w/ them in various applications. As I have become a fan of Hodgdon's Extreme Powders since our PA summers and winters vary so much in temperature and I don't wish to work up summer AND winter loads, does anyone know the temperature stability of Alliant's - line of powders for rifles? I see nothing on their website related to that.

Also, what shape are the powder kernels are these powders? Are they different from powder to powder? I am curious on this due to metering from my measures.

Thanx,

Mike B.
I use AA-2230 in a 223 Rem. Meters like water in my Dillan. You did not specify caliber.

Good luck, and have fun finding a good load.

I work for ATK Launch Systems. When the parent company (ATK) bought Hercules, their line of powder became the basis for Alliant Powders. This isn't meant to be an advertisement:)

Blue Dot, Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, 2400 and Power Pistol are all flake powders although the size of flakes may vary.

I'm getting good groups in 223 and 45-70 right now with Reloader 7, which also appears to be a flake powder.

I've got some Reloader 19 to try in my 30-06. It appears to be a short grain powder, much shorter than IMR 4198.

I didn't see anything on Alliant's website on temperature stability either, but they do have an email address you could contact them. MY assumption is that their powders will have approximately the same temperature sensitivity as anyone else's. I do my load development in the early fall or spring with moderate temperatures, I stay at or below listed maximums and never worry about the effects of temperature on my loads.

ATK operates the Lake City Army ammunition plant and produces a large percentage of the military ammunition. Probably using an Alliant powder. ATK also owns Federal, CCI, Speer and a few other companies most sportsmen will recognize.

I am a big fan of R#22 in larger cases and I have noticed HUGE swings in velocity when it gets colder but the impact is still the same at 100 yards...I don't get that.

I shoot R#19 in my 25/06 with the 100's getting 200+ fps more than the all time favorite of IMR 4350.

R#19 in a 243 or 6 Rem with the 80 & 85g bullets usually turns in some extremely impressive velocity with accuracy.

I have used these powders for years and they seem to be very good. Am not a fan of ball type powders at all. These are good powders. Now on the temp or Extreme powders I would not depend on that statement a whole lot as have seen them not stable either. Is Benchmark an extreme powder?

Thanx guys. a bunch of info. there.

Ras53, I believe I did send an email to them, and didn't get anything back, but I'll send one again ( if I actually sent the first one!!! - too busy lately!).

Steve, Benchmark is touted as an extreme powder I believe.

May try these out as new projects come up. Thanx again guys!
