And, #1 longsprings strong enough for coon?

Have some new #1LS and was wondering if these would be strong enough for coon. They lock up good and seem to stay together good. Maybe a little too small?

Thanks

IMHO

Yes a #1 longspring would work(in a drowning type set with slide and wire). I wouldn't recommend it for a non drowner set. I would be inclined to use a #1. or 1.5 coil or #11 ,or #2 longspring in the non drowning situations. The larger (stronger) trap also covers ya in case ya tangle with something larger. I once held an otter on land in a #1 coil, the #1 coil and #1 (#11) double longspring are my favorite coon traps for water line use.

I think Chuckduster is right. #1 longsprings are just not strong enough, especially on large coons. I like #2 victor double longsprings. I caught a real nice bobcat in a 1 1/2 coil I had set on a rotten log for a coon.

Yellowhammer, what were you using as bait/lure? I've been trying to think of a good bait for coon that a cat may like.
Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it

wnc gun, the number 1 longspring can be modified to hold coons. remove the chain from the spring side of the trap. drill a hole in the trap frame on the opposite side of the spring itself. attach chain with a rivet and add an inline swivel. a lap link is then added to end of chain to attach to a rebar stake. with the chain attached in this manner, the coon is always pulling into the stongest part of the trap, the spring. not away from it as it comes from the factory. the number 11 is simply a number one with an added spring and it will hold any coon that does not twist or chew out.

I have held some pretty big coons in #1 coilsprings. I usally use them around towns because most dogs will cover the trap with its foot and not get caught. I have used the #11 longsprings a lot too. I've never really tried to use the #1 longsprings but I think they would work great for drowning sets and should work if modified the way described above. Let us know how they work after being modified. It would be a cheap way to trap a bunch of coons.

thebear, I have held some big coons in number 1 coilsprings too. There is only one drawback to them. A coon can use its back feet and depress the levers on coilsprings. I have lost coons due to this. But i still use them because they can be set in tight places and are easy to bed. All my number one longsprings are set up the way I described above and they work great. If I was starting out, I would spend the extra money on number 11's.

WNC- I was using canned fish steaks (sardines) when I caught that cat. There is not anything in the woods that you might want to catch that will not eat sardines. I've caught skunk, opposum, otter, bobcat, fox, coons, dogs, and house cats using them. They are a cheap and effective bait. I was using sardines in concunction with gray fox urine when I caught the red foxes that I posted in the photo gallery a while back.
