Another Fisher called in

Hey guys, I called in another fisher on saturday! This one was just awesome. He was big and had grizzled coloration on his front shoulders. Here's the story: I was sitting agaist a huge fallen oak tree on a field/wood edge. I had set-up the e-caller close, only about 10 yards away. I started with some bird sounds and then switched to a red fox & distressed rabbit sound. I'd say at after about 8-10 minutes a fisher came in on a full run. I could hear and see glipses of him comming through the woods, my heart started pounding. He stopped about 5 yards from the caller (15 yards from me) in some small scrub oaks and stood on his hind legs staring at the caller. Then came a series of dashes at the caller. For a while he was bouncing on all fours like an excited house cat. He was really jacked-up. He never saw or even looked at me, he was totally commited to getting that "rabbit." He eventually got about a foot from the caller, gave it a good sniff, and ran back from where he came.

Yellowhammer, here in Minnesota, they are illegal to shoot. They can be taken by trapping only and that season is very short and held in December.
I don't know what Wisconsin's laws are.
They would make a great trophy for the wall though.

It is not legal to shoot them here. Trapping only by permit. I think every fisher taken by permit must be presented to a DNR warden for inspection, and tagged. Permits are limited and awarded by lottery.

By the amout of fishers I've seen, and by the amount of tracks I see, I believe this is a ridculous managment controll effort. There are way to many fishers; by using their hunting ability they must be decamating small game populations.

That does not take away how cool it is to see one of these buggers come to a call. Having one 10 yards away trying to attack the caller is thrilling!

Over the years, I've had several fisher respond to my calling here in NE MN. Like you said, it's exciting. And pine marten........they are abundant here too. I had one come right down the tree and wasn't 3 feet from my face while trying to figure out where that dyin'rabbit was.

Spend time around Danbury, I've seen more fisher than grouse this year, more turkeys than both. Things were fine there before the fishers.

I don't live far from there. Its about a 40 min drive to the NE from me. But I don't think our area is unique in fishers. I've seen them in the north-central part of the state and a friend near Cumberland had one kill a fawn outside his bedroom window. Bottom line, Fisher managment in the northern part of the state needs serious changes. Regional if necessary, but something should be done. I'm glad their here, I think their pretty cool creatures, but by my observations I beleive they have surpassed their "population goal." More liberal hunting/trapping is more than justified, IMHO.
