Another question about amps

Hello doggin coyotes,
I just put an e-caller together like the one described in the tech section. The only thing I had to buy was the amp, I had the rest laying around. The RS amp is rated at 200 mw, That equates to .4 watts.
(one mw = .001 watt) I have not tried it in the field yet but it drives my wife and dogs nuts in the house. I'm pretty new to this calling with the e-caller stuff so take it for what it's worth. I don't know what the ideal wattage is for an e-caller.

OOPS!! I need to make a correction the conversion was right, my math sucked it's .2 watts. Sorry!! and the RS amp may be 250 mw, I can't tell anymore I painted it. I paint everything, my wife thinks I'm sick!!

Hey Taz-Man,

You were pretty close the first time, the RS Mini-Amp is rated at 200 mW @ 16 ohm load. If I remember my electronics that would be around 400 mW or .4 watt into an 8 ohm load, most speakers we will use in an e-caller will be 8 ohm speakers.

I am using a 7-watt amplifier in my e-caller, I tried the RS unit but found it too touchy in the volume department. The difference between the "right" volume and too much was very little. With the 7-watt amp I can set the voume real low and still fully drive the speaker, with good volume control at the sound source.

And finally, I seem to have a lot less noise of any kind with the 7-watt amp, the RS unit made a hiss noise all by it's self the hiss increased as a sound was put through the transmitter/receiver to the amp.

That's my $.02

Details, details, 200mw=.2w in other words same amount of watts just a different way to express it. BTW just because you cut the impedance in half it does not means that your amplifier will be able to deliver the hoped wattage. The amplifier must have the circuitry capable to deliver the wattage. In this case the IC that RS uses is ratted at 250 mw top.

Take care,
Nandy

Where can I get a 7 watt amp like you have? I am getting the hiss in the speaker when the sound starts to pick up a little. It seems to get worse at the frantic parts in the rabbit distress.I hope you know what i'm talking about. Thanks in advance. I'm useing the RS amp now.

Some tips:

Turn down the RS AMP volume (it shouldnt be too much past "on".)

TURN UP the volume on your sound player.

use Duracell Ultra batteries.

Larry,
Did you ever find out more about the Smokey mini-amp? I found it on musiciansfriend.com for about 25 bucks but they don't tell how many watts it's rated at. If it is a 1 watt amp, it might be better than the radio shack unit.
Thanks,
Chris

I'm too am using a 7 watt amp like Elalto. I got mine from DCkits.com (assembly/soldering required). It works really well - just like Elalto said. Plugging the line input from the Azden into the amp input jack and turning the amp all the way up delivers more volume than the azden alone, with better clarity, and still leaves all the real volume control with the player (MP3). Using a patch cord to plug the ear jack from the Azden into the amp input, and turning up the amp about as high as it will go without starting to "hiss", delivers a lot more volume than the Azden alone, with some sacrifice in qualty (to my ear).

I've got mine setup to where I can use just the Azden to drive the speaker (very light, compact package), or I can use the amplifier and a small 12v gell cell to drive the speaker which gives a bit more volume and longer battery life, but is more heavy and bulky (but still not bad). Pretty slick, I'm liking it enough that I think I'll probably leave my Foxpro home this weekend.

cmichel, after researching a little more on the Smokey amp I've come to the conclusion it's rated at a 1/2 watt. Still might be a whole bunch better that the radio shack amp. I like the idea that it's still powered by a 9 volt battery rather than jumping up into the 12 volt size amps. I still haven't convinced myself I even NEED an amp. LOL The player/azden/speaker set up I'm using now seems to have way more good clear volume than I'll ever need. May order one any way just to play with after the x-mas bills wind down. heck I've spent $25 on dumber things. Larry

Larry,
I think I'm gonna get the 7 watt amp like the canakit one through hobbytron.com It should be just like the one elalto is using. If you buy it assembled, all you should have to do is put it in a case and hook to a 12 volt battery. The smokey one did look good, but I think I'll get the Nady 12 volt system and hook to the same battery.
Thanks to elalto for all the info. If there's any more instructions you can give, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris, HUH? hold on, back up, time out. I guess i must of missed something some where. Your saying Nady has a 12 volt wireless system? Steer me in the right direction for that one if ya can buddy. Thanks, Larry

I purchased the Smokey Amp because I wanted to stay with a nine volt battery. It sounds good to me. You can hear a little hiss if you put your head next to speaker with nothing playing but I did not notice it while it was playing.

I put my new caller together yesterday so I had to go out yesterday afternoon. No four legged predators came but I did have a red tailed hawk come in twice.

I followed the instrucions in the Tech section except for the amp. I am using a RCA CD player and I had to pick up some cables from Radio Shack since the amp has 1/4 inch connectors. Oh yea the amp is rated at 1 watt. The extra cables I bought were RS # 42-2433 and RS # 42-2560. The RS # 42-2560 on the their website is coiled but the one I bought in the store is straight.

I want to thank Stretch for the information on putting this together. I did not have a caller but I have been with other people calling and I wanted my own and thanks to you I have it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Rockbottom, I'm glad to hear that you took the plunge and are trying the Smokey. I STILL haven't got around to ordering one to try but I will sooner or later. So does it put out good loud volume? Nice and clear? Battery life? Larry

According to the information that came with the amp the battery should last about 15 hours. I ran it about hour yesterday. It came with a battery in it. I will change it out so I know the battery is fresh and then keep up with my use to see how long it lasts

As far as the sound goes if I turn up the volume to max it sounds a little distorted but it is really loud, louder than I will call anyway. I might just pick a RS amp so I can make an honest comparison between the two.
