The very successful USDA screwworm eradication program of the 1960's drastically increased the whitetail deer population in south Texas. The first year I hunted one ranch in Starr county, probably 1962 or so, I shot the only two deer I saw, both 8 point bucks. Didn't see a doe or fawn that year.
Remember the twin engine aircraft, probably Lodestars, flying patterns overhead and dumping 6" or so square inch cardboard boxes full of sterile flies.
Can't remember how long it took for the deer herd to rebound, but rebound up it did. Hunted that ranch 27 years and the numbers and quality of deer improved exponentially.
Understand the USDA has re-opened the program in the RGV; hopefully they will be able to stop the spread north.

ETA: August issue of the American Hunter has similar article regarding screwworms in Texas, but couldn't find it online.
