Another Shotgun load for coyotes post, with pattern pictures.

I went and shot some skeet and 5- stand today and patterned some coyote loads while I was at the range. I wanted to see what the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke patterned like at 25 yards compared to a Carlson's extended modified choke. There was not much difference at 25 yards.
Christmas2005_0737.jpg

This is a 1-1/2 oz reload of lead BB's at 25 yards with a modified choke, 5 pellets in the bulls eye and 38 pellets in the 12" circle.
Christmas2005_0738.jpg

This is a Carlson's Dead Coyote choke at 25 yards with a 1-1/2 oz reload of BB's. There was 6 pellets in the bulls eye and 41 pellets in the 12" circle.
Christmas2005_0735.jpg

This pattern is at 40 yards with a extended modified choke using Federal Premium 1-7/8 oz of copper coated BB's. There were zero pellets in the bulls eye, 13 pellets in the 12" circle and 49 pellets on the 22" X 28" paper.

This pattern was with a Carlson's Dead Coyote choke at 40 yards with a Federal Premium 1-7/8 oz of lead copper coated BB's. There was 3 pellets in the bulls eye, 16 pellets in the 12" circle and 53 pellets on the 22" X 28" paper.
Christmas2005_0732.jpg

This pattern is with a modified choke at 40 yards with the 3" Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote load. There was 3 pellets in the bulls eye, 21 pellets in the 12" circle and 41 pellets on the 22" X 28" paper.
Christmas2005_0620.jpg

This pattern is at 40 yards with a Carlson's Dead Coyote choke using a 3" Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote load. There was 6 pellets in the bulls eye, 20 pellets in the 12" circle and 47 pellets on the 22" X 28" paper. At 40 yards with the loads I have shot at paper the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke out performed the extended modified choke by quite a bit.

Nice work, I wonder what it looks like at 70yds(like the manufacturer claims). I shoot the 3" Hevi Shot Dead Coyote Load with the carlsons dead coyote choke tube. I shot a yote at 50 yds, It knocked him off his feet but he got back up and dissappeared and I had plenty of time, I took my time aimed at the neck while he was standing still. Was dissappointing. It's still what I hunt with though, I just figure 50 yds is too far, 40 is my limit now.

Bob,

It's not that much of a concern but after shooting some competitive trap, the first thing I noticed was most of your patterns are really tight but slightly low and left.

Looks like it'll kill a coyote in a heart beat though.

carlson's choke tubes and dead coyote loads work great. limit shots to 40 yards with number 4 buck. i killed two hogs in texas at 40 yards with #000 buck. dropped both pigs in there tracks.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I hope to get out Friday and do some pattern testing with Dead Coyote and No. Four Buck. Maybe I'll have some pic's to contribute Friday night or over the weekend.

Yea right... Or better yet, imagine 90 - 100+ yards like the "testimonials" on the website, and/or, a few wishful fellers tell the tales of here occasionally. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Bob,
I wouldn't hesitate to use that for coyotes. i would try to fix the left issue. You never know when at the heat of the moment you forget to hold right when only a head shot is due-able.
not trying to hijack this thread but,I wonder how 3",2 oz., #6 shot in turkey loads would work ( Winchester Supreme Double X Magnum )? My mosberg 835 with the factory xx full choke puts 244 pellets on a 8"x11" sheet of paper, 70 in the turkey's head/neck at 30 yards. Slightly less at 40. I've always read bout world record patterns and the pellet count was way lower then mine is. Could I be holding onto a record holding gun? This is my safe queen for turkey hunting. It'll litteraly roll any 20 pound bird at 40 yards.

Razorsedge, Eventually you get to a range where the shot doesn't have the energy to penetrate to ensure a kill. You may roll a 20# turkey at 40 yards with #6 shot, but you probably won't kill many coyotes at that range with that load. You need pattern density and penetration to kill. Without both you'll only end up frustrated.

Razorsedge, when I first started calling coyotes I tried using 3" magnum 1-7/8 oz of copper coated 2's and I did not like their performance on coyotes running away from me. Number 2 pellets do not weigh enough to penetrate through the back side of small coyotes. Lead BB's, lead T shot and lead #4 buckshot will knock down coyotes running away as long as they are 40 yards or less away. I would never try shooting coyotes with #6 bird shot.

Well I think if you would of held just right of your aiming point, you would of smoked that 12" circle. It did very good as the pictures indicates. Your point of impact is different from your line of sight.

But the pattern is very tight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Great test and no doubt the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke tube is great.

I watched my partner drop a coyote at 68 yards a couple weeks ago, he only had half the coyote showing when he squeezed the trigger and it dropped.

At that range you must be prepared for a follow up shot, but the load works and the pattern is good well beyond 40 yards.

Thanks for posting your tests.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Here's some of a 4 buck handload at 40 yards from a 10ga. using a .705" Terror choke. Just for comparison purposes, the circle is the standard 30" diameter:

My, that's a dandy pattern!

There's some new shot coming out this year that look like it will put the "dead coyote" loads to shame. Look for one from Winchester and one from Remington.

I'm amazed at how far this stuff will kill dead a giant canada goose. I've killed a bunch with the premium shot and I'm not even going to tell you how far I shoot them with my 10 gauge 'cuz you'll all call me a liar. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Buker I've been watching the Winchester and Remington stuff now for awhile.

Their prices are much more expensive and I have not seen any reviews on their stuff for predator calling.

So put it to shame??? I'm waiting sir!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

CDR,
I would love to know what your load is there.

I'm indecisive right now deciding on a load for my sp10. I've patterned A LOT OF loads in 2 1/8 oz. #4 buck, 2 1/8 oz. #F buck, and 2 oz. HS #B. All my loads are coming from Ballistic Products manuals. They will all kill coyotes, but I'm just not quite satisfied yet. I'm extremely anxious to test them out on coyotes!

My cardboard squares just happen to be approximately 22" X 22". (I need to do a better job of drawing a smaller circle on my targets before I take pics. Sorry about that.)

SP10 40/46 (2 1/8oz) #4 Buck @ 40 yards with Trulock xfull; roll crimp

SP10 32/46 (2 1/8oz) #4 Buck @ 40 yards with patternmaster; roll crimp

I'd post pics of #F buck targets, but they aren't as good. I gave up on #F loads.

Here are some Hevy Shot B patterns. The squares are 15".
SP10 61/100 (2oz) #B HS @ 40 yards with patternmaster; roll crimp

SP10 60/100 (2oz) #B HS @ 40 yards with Trulock XFull; roll crimp

Here is why I have decided to dismiss the advice of some to use a more open choke with HS.
SP10 12/100 (2oz) #B HS @ 40 yards with Modified; roll crimp

Yup, put it to shame. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Of course it's going to depend on your particular shotgun and choke as to how it will pattern for each person. It's not magic, just better.

It is expensive. But, for most of us, $4.20 a pop isn't too expensive to ensure clean kills on coyotes at long shotgun ranges. Heck, we don't kill that many to begin with and I sure as heck want to make sure I get them when I pull the trigger.

I forgot to mention that Federal has a winner too in their "heavy weight" ammo.

Check it out.

I'm not claiming any 90 or 100 yard shots, but I killed one earlier this year at 68 yards with the Dead Coyote 3 1/2" T shot. He was DRT, my dad was next to me in disbelief, his exact words were " I would have called you a lier if I hadn't seen that". I'm a believer in this stuff.

Randy,

Do you (or anybody) have any idea if Win or Rem (or anybody) will be selling the 'heavier than lead' stuff in anything larger than #B? I think it sucks that they will sell dead coyote ammo with #T but won't sell the shot alone, not to mention nothing for the 10 gauge. I want some HS in T or #4 buck size!!!

Thanks Buker, I'll be watching close.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I agree on putting them down even at $4.50 a round.

Joel I think your second target down looks the best. I would not hesitate to shoot that load... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Joel I spanked a dog yesterday with hevishot 3" #2's at 30 yards, man she went down and her tail twirled and that was it.

I'm going to try the B stuff, I think it will work good.

Joel,

Remington is making their wingmaster HD in 10 gauge BB. In 12 gauge they have 1.5 ounces of "T" sized shot in their 3.5" shell for the 12 gauge. I'm not sure if they'll offer it in their 10 gauge shells yet.

It looks like this one is going to be the ticket. No matter what gauge and shot size you decide on, this load is going to be devastating on coyotes.

Remington has a cash back program on the Wingmaster HD for $15.00 cash back per box for up to 10 boxes through January of 2008. The Wingmaster HD Waterfowl loads come in BB and the Predator loads come in T shot. Natchez has 10 ga Federal Premium 2-1/4 oz copper coated BB's for $35.06 per box of 25 shells.
