Any luck with squirrel distress??

Just curious if anyone has had luck using squirrel distress. It sounds as realistic as any of the sounds I've heard. It definately sounds like something getting ate alive. Here in Pa there are a ton of squirrels as well.

Yes, it works. I've used both hand calls (Faulk's) and my FX3 with excellent results. Sorting through scat will show you that coyotes do indeed eat plenty of squirrels. BTW, I've also called grey fox, bobcat, and about every bird of prey around with the same distressed squirrel sounds. Another note, it will call squirrels occasionally too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

GC,

Thats how i knew for sure was coyote scat having squirrel bones/hair from grey squirrels.

I have to tell a little story!
When i hunted near dallas,Ga. west of atlanta i would see tons of greys on the ground, eating ,running ,chasing each other.I knew that as many as there were some would have to fall victim to predators.
I'd call softly in the hardwoods and they'd sit up there and bark to beat the band. They would look my way while i was calling then start barking a few seconds after i stopped calling.
Anyway I was moving to a new area and going to eat a snack before i got to my calling location. As i looked for a spot to sit w/a good view a squirrel pounced onto the ground 20' away oblivious to my presence.I stood there and thought -this happens to coyotes i'm sure, then the thought went through my head thinking if i can even come close to catching the squirrel a coyote surely could!
I had already parked my rifle and small waist pack,so i exploded towards the squirrel like some king of a nutcase.
Initially he froze then ran maybe 5' and jumped up on a 4" diameter tree and started up as i got to the tree he was maybe 8-10' up.
I grabbed the tree and yanked on it hard letting it stop my momentum , out he came spread eagle i put my hands up but balked a tiny bit realizing this is a wild critter w/teeth and claws.
He landed on my forearm and ran up my shoulder and the back of my head leaving a couple of scratchs near my hairline and up the same tree and gone.
I thought -i hope nobody saw that and looked around and realized [shoulders back, sniff, shake head up and down=like barney fife] yuup a coyote can catch a squirrel. > Mike

Good story Mike! LOL! I've seen coyotes chasing squirrels. While sitting in a deer stand I've witnessed coyotes after squirrels on a couple of occasions. I've also seen both an owl and a redtailed hawk catch squirrels. Hawks more than once. On a year when the little buggers are thick the coyote scat while be white with their little bones and claws. Stands to reason bobcats and fox do the same as the coyotes. Where I hunt in the big timber there are a heck of a lot more squirrels than rabbits.

I would have to say the squirrel distress works.
I was out squirrel hunting years ago with my
Ruger 22 pistol. I shot a gray squirrel out
of a tree. When the squirrel hit the ground
it immediately started squealing loudly, with
in seconds a gray fox came running out of no
where grapped the squirrel and never missed
a beat. I could only sit there under a tree
with my mouth open in disbelief. That was
an exciting experience.

i've used the mr. squirrel squirrel distress. it's actually a baby squirrel distress, used for calling squirrels. i haven't had any luck calling predators with it but the squirrels come runnin'. i was sitting in my car one day on lunch break and i brought a squirrel down from 20' up in a tree. i had him roaming around under my car looking for junior. i try it every time i go out. it hasn't worked yet but it will by god, it will!
