Any of you guys ever use a Jewel Trigger with a safety on the bottom??

Like the title says...

I was offered a Jewell Trigger for my Remington 700 VSF that I am restoring, but it has the safety in the front of the trigger guard, so you push your finger forward to take it off safe, and then pull back to fire. It is a 2 ounce trigger.

I'm NOT lookin' for abstract opinions about what people "think" it it might be like...

... I'm lookin' for comments from guys that have actually owned one or used one for a bit.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Jewell on my 6mm Remmy but not like the one you have. If you would, post up some pics of it. I'm curious as to what it looks like.

It is fine, but I usually buy my Jewells without a safety. No reason to pay extra for a safety. They are all useless. The only real safety is muzzle control.

Well, Jack, that's really cute, and preachie, but out of context. The only real safety is the brain.

But all that cute preachin' put aside...

ALL of my varmint rifles are single shots, and all have 2 ounce triggers, or set triggers.

If the shot is not taken, the rifle is unloaded.
I do not carry loaded varmint rifles in the field, because of a bad situation that happened many years ago (the SOB nearly killed me!!). And I will not hunt with someone that does.

I have safeties on my 2 ounce triggers so I can unload them with "0" chance of an AD/ND, even though the muzzle is pointed in the dirt. Nothing ruins an afternoon of woodchuck shooting like an unexpected "BANG", especially when people are not wearing their ear muffs, and it was a .220 Swift or 6mm Remington that went off.

---

I am bringing a rifle back to life - "The Resurrection Riffle" - which was going to be scrapped for the action cuz it shot so bad, but turns out to be an outstanding example of Remington's ability to build fine varmint rifles... it's shooting ability was buried in a "gunsmith's" bad workmanship.

I tried two Timneys, and they turned out to really suck, big time

So I am going to a Jewell. This will be the only repeating varmint rifle I own, and I want to be able to unload it, with 110% knowledge that there will be no AD/ND to scare the crap out of my shooting partners... even if it is in a safe direction.

I have never used a bottom safety, but this one is offered at a very attractive price.

Odd placement and arrangment in that you basically pull the safety back much as you would the trigger, in close proximity to the trigger to put it in the safe position.

I have a pellet rifle that is set up this way and I hate it. No ADs but I can see how it would happen.

"preachie" may be my new favorite word

Yup... an odd arrangement. I thought it might be for some "special" reason, but I can't figure it out.

I can see where it might lead to AD's if you were pullin' the safety towards you to set it, and you slipped onto the trigger - at 2 ounces, it don't take much

In military safeties like that, you set them from in front of the guard, but this one has to be set just next to the 2 ounce trigger

I am probably going to pass on it. I asked on some other sites, and no one was raving about it.

The other one (with the normal safety) is what I want, but everyone is "out of stock"... what else is friggin' new these days???

I'm glad you like "Preachie"... it fits so many pompous and condescending people.

I'd rather deal with confrontational people anytime - they are not saccharine... they just say what's on their mind, right out front.

Lots of custom actions do NOT have a cut out for the normal top right safety. If a man was going to make a varmint rifle & wanted a safety AND didn't want to file on his custom action. Jewel gives the option of a bottom safety. That's the main reason there is this option.

I have two seperate friends that both have Jewels with bottom safeties & have shot both rifles a good bit. It takes a little getting used to but after a few times it's just like anything else...

One has had an AD when he was deer hunting with his rifle in very cold weather (numb fingers & fold away gloves were involved). Yes one time is too many but he has hunted & rode this gun around LOTS with no other issues. I know a bunch of people that have AD'd with normal safeties so whats new.... If you get careless bad chit can happen.

I would not be afraid of one for a varmint rifle. Matter of fact, if you don't want it, let me know were it's at & I'll take it for a deal!

PS- the "knob" has a screw in it & you can change the same trigger to right or left hand by switching the screw/knob.

It's funny there is so much dribble between my post & you OP after:

I have four custom rifles with the bottom safety and love them. I have never had an issue pushing or pulling them for either safety position. I find them a lot more convenient than reaching up with my nimble thumb to switch to fire.
