Well, Jack, that's really cute, and preachie, but out of context. The only real safety is the brain.
But all that cute preachin' put aside...
ALL of my varmint rifles are single shots, and all have 2 ounce triggers, or set triggers.
If the shot is not taken, the rifle is unloaded.
I do not carry loaded varmint rifles in the field, because of a bad situation that happened many years ago (the SOB nearly killed me!!). And I will not hunt with someone that does.
I have safeties on my 2 ounce triggers so I can unload them with "0" chance of an AD/ND, even though the muzzle is pointed in the dirt. Nothing ruins an afternoon of woodchuck shooting like an unexpected "BANG", especially when people are not wearing their ear muffs, and it was a .220 Swift or 6mm Remington that went off.

I am bringing a rifle back to life - "The Resurrection Riffle" - which was going to be scrapped for the action cuz it shot so bad, but turns out to be an outstanding example of Remington's ability to build fine varmint rifles... it's shooting ability was buried in a "gunsmith's" bad workmanship.
I tried two Timneys, and they turned out to really suck, big time
So I am going to a Jewell. This will be the only repeating varmint rifle I own, and I want to be able to unload it, with 110% knowledge that there will be no AD/ND to scare the crap out of my shooting partners... even if it is in a safe direction.
I have never used a bottom safety, but this one is offered at a very attractive price.
