I decided not to call it, after watching the weather right up to the 6:00 sign up deadline friday night.
The wind was howling down in Southern, Utah, and only looked to get worse. I knew the hunting would be fine Saturday, but did not want to make the drive from St. George area to Richfield in a blizzard, and icy roads for check in. Check in went till 10:00 Saturday night, and we would have had to hang around till then to see the final outcome. A call from one of my friends at 6:30, said, two dogs winning, one dog second place, and no other dogs turned in to even have a third place yet.
When I spoke with the promoter at 5:59 Friday night he had 46 teams signed up. Hope some of our guys from the board faired well. Some nice rifles to be won this year.

Come on guys, Hurry, Hurry, I am sitting in a fresh blanket of 3" snow this morning, and waiting to hear some results. Since I can't go calling today.

I did not go to the check in. It took me about 6 hours to make a 4 hour trip to hunt Sat. morning. It was a very ugly drive Sat morning from Ogden to central Utah. I talked to one team just before dark, they had 2 dogs they got first thing after day break. It was very windy and very cold all day. We saw a lot of track but no coyotes, never even heard any. We talked to one local trapper that informed us that it was hunted heavy where we were. All the locals hunt them. He also told us that it had been flown recently and there was a bounty on them. We heard this was the 3rd contest in the general area. Kanab, Delta and Richfield. We decided to take some time and shoot rabbits. Had a good time even though we had bad luck hunting coyotes. I was going to enter the one in Cedar City in 2 weeks but think I will pass after what I didnt see and what I heard.

reb8600, You should go ahead and call it, as it is a two day contest, and will give you plenty of time to travel away from the over called areas. There has been a boat load of contests down this way as of late, and even more to the west of us in Nevada, but you can always find somewhere out in that remote desert wasteland, to howl up a couple of dogs. Come on down and have some fun.
Hope to change your mind, and see you guys there.

Well after getting winded all day and only seeing 2 dogs and only getting a shot at one of them, we turned in one dog that went 30 pounds. We missed heaviest dog by two pounds.
The winning team turned in 6 dogs at around 9:30 PM. These are the same guys that won the Utah Predator Assn. contest with 12 dogs last month.
The second place team was a father/son duo that turned in 5 dogs. Third place beat out another team by weight turning in 3 dogs. The smallest dog turned in weighed in at 16 pounds and won the team $100.00

Thanks to all of the guys and gals at Jorgensons in Richfield. They did a good job for only their second attempt at running a contest. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Those guys that won first must have a serious honeyhole!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Great hunt. We only got one dog but we had a blast. Perfect weather -- overcast with a slight wind and no snow. Saw five and got only the one. Missed one at 75 yards which I attribute to "faulty equipment" and will use this to justify the purchase of another gun.

We missed smallest dog by a pound or two so we did not stay for the final results. Arrived at my home in Payson at about midnight and spent the next morning pushing 14 inches of snow out of my drive way.

The people at Jorgensens did a great job of putting on their second hunt. Great bunch of guys entered in the hunt and it is always fun to swap lies with them. I'll be there next year for sure. Big thanks to Jorgensons and congrats to the winners and all who participated.

Anyone got any info on the Cedar City hunt? I'd like to give that one a go too.

I agree! I am thinking of getting a GPS tracking device to hide on their truck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They both get Remington 22-250 heavy barrel rifles. Not a good stand gun, but a hell of a bench gun and prarie dog killer!

I think proper terminology would be half truth and whole lies!

I disagree I think heavy barreled 22-250's are an execllent stand gun. I own 2 of them and one heavy barreled .223. I count on my 22-250's to put those long dogs down, but the .223 is much gentler on the fur for sure!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

We had a great time and took second place Any time I can spend with my son out doing what we love to do is as good of day as I can ask for. We had a blast. I broke my sling and my gun hit the ground pretty hard knocking my scope off but my son casey stepped up to the plate and laid the smack down on 4 of the 5 (Hes rubbin it in pretty hard) Here is a pic of the 5 dogs we got. Many thanks to all of the guys and gals at Jorgensons in Richfield what a great bunch of folks.

Nice going there Carver boys. Man satch we should have entered looks like it was a blast!! You guys got yourselves some nice guns too didn't you Kerry?

Congrats to all the winners!!!
RedMist and myself turned in three coyotes and after they were weighed in we ended up with 5th place.
It was a tough day calling in the wind and snow.
They had a total of 50 teams sign up.
We will put some pics on tomorrow.

We had a great time, just didn't get the job done when it came to the killing part. We went out on the west desert, made several stands in the wind to no avail, so we spent the rest of the day driving and glassing. We only got shooting at 1 dog at over 400 yds, Came home with great memories and 0 dogs. Congrats to the winners and thanks to JD and the crew at Jorgensen's, it was a lot of fun, looking forward to next year.
