Any success with Fawn Distress??

Howdy folks. During deer season I don't get to predator hunt as much as I'd like to......not because I'm a strict deer hunter, but due to the fact that it's always seemed to be a waste of time trying it at my lease.

My deer lease is between Boerne and Comfort, and I swear, it seems as though the ranchers did a number on coyote numbers in the past. I've been on this lease for about 15 years, (1,300 acres) and we've only seen about 5-6 yotes. Now we still see their scat about, usually in the middle of some of our roads. We'v also got a few bobcats.

I have had 0% luck on calling anything in here using rabbit distress sounds. I'm wondering if maybe trying out a closed reed fawn distress call might be the ticket in that it might be something they haven't heard before.

What's the general consensus on trying this out? Will a bobact respond to something as large as a distressed fawn?

Many thanks folks.

Hi Jake,

There are probably lots of coyotes on the property. I would try mixing it up with the sounds if I were you. Have you tried the howler? The fawn distress seems to consistently draw a lot of does for me, and that can be good or bad, depending on the scenario. The best thing, in my opinion, is to try different sounds on different sets. I don't have any experience calling bobcats, so I can't speak to the possibility of a distressed fawn drawing in a 'cat.

I have had success with a fawn bawl/distress. A fawn decoy really adds to it.
Here in Illinois I always try to use sounds that aren't here.
GOOD LUCK!

In "howling mode" I like a Challange/pup distress combo.

For a different twist, try pup distress and a "wabbit" or the deer fawn.

Pups are easy to run off and an adult 'ote figures that if it's safe enough for a pup to be there with "dinner" then maybe "old sly" can slip in there safely.

Interesting......I think I'll give the fawn distress a whirl and see how she goes. It's pretty weird, I've tried cottontail calls, jackrabbits, woodpeckers, the same combination of the last three that are on my foxpro as well....and nuthin'!

I can drive an hour to 300 acres that my family owns and take down as many as 3 dogs in a morning, but I've spent years out at my lease with no success. Maybe this fawn distress will change that......if not at least it gives me an excuse to add a new call to my collection!

Late, last fall.
The last coyote I called in, was on a fawn bleat. Popped up along a weeded fence line 200yrds out, on adjoining property[no permission] /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. Apparently [they] know were the property lines are /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif.

Followed him in my scope, regardless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
