Anybody else use a red dot for deer hunting?

I just bought a minty Aimpoint Comp ML3 2MOA for my RRA .458 SOCOM and intend to use it for Indiana deer season. Never used one before but I was afraid the SOCOM would destroy one of my nice scopes. What kind of range are you comfortable shooting a red dot at for deer sized game? THe .458 SOCOM is more or less a 150 yard gun so no long range shots. Most of my hunting will be in thick woods and a pine tree farm with lots of brush. Is a 100+ yard shot with an Aimpoint feasable?

Depends on the size of the dot, what ammo your particular firearm perfoms best with and how well you sight it in and so on. I have 2 propoints and am happy with both sighted in for different scenerios.

In all honesty I think that's a question you will have to answer for yourself after some range time. Opinions on how well, how far, ect. are fine. Knowing firsthand is always better. If it were me I'd just do some shootin and decide for myself.

I'm sure that's not the answer you were lookin for but that's the advice I would offer.

Stay safe, have fun, and hit 'em harder than you did the time before.

Piece of cake, and fast. Just about perfect for something like your SOCOM.

Not so good on a 400 yard P-Dog shoot. That's because you can't see them without magnification, the EOTech is plenty accurate. The bullet hits the dot if it's sighted in correctly, same as a scope.

I shoot with a RDS with 3x magnifier regularly to 300 yards and have pushed it to 400 yards. So far I use the RDS for personal protection, 3 gun, and varmint hunting. Most folks say the breaking point for the RDS is 75-100 yards. For me it's 150 yards - I'm sure this has to do with eye sight and experience. Meaning, even if I didn't have a 3x magnifier I'd still be happy using my Aimpoint out to 150 yards.

My favorite deer gun has a Leupold 3-9 on it.

Some folks like the RDS and others don't. I believe it can and will serve you well at the distances you list as long as it turns out to fit what you like. Many folks don't really understand a RDS and that's why they push away from using them.

Edited to add: I agree with Evil Lurker that the size of the target matters. I regularly shoot plates and targets at those long distances. I rarely get to take a shot at game at those distances. I have taken a javelina out a long way (over 400 yards) with a RDS and hit him where I wanted to.

I use one on my 870 with a slug barrel. Works great for the yardage I shoot at 75 or less

Mark2 Remember to turn off , been there that sucked

For quick target acquisition in dark/deep brush its a good option. I find it easier to acquire any target in a dark background with a red dot scope, compared to fine crosshairs.
