Hey everyone! I finally decided to de-lurk and join the forum. I'm trying to get into coyote hunting since we seem to have a bunch of them here and I was wondering if there were any members here from Georgia. I'd really like the opportunity to learn some basics from someone who's been calling for a while. Thanks!

Welcome Doc! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm not in GA, but only 5 miles or so from the TN/GA line.

What part of GA are you in?

It's WAY too hot here for my tastes. Too many snakes, ticks, chiggers.....well you get the picture. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm out SE of Atlanta near Jackson Lake in Jasper County. We're getting more and more coyotes here and I decided to learn how to hunt them as a reason to spend more time in the woods. I've never hunted them either but I'm trying to learn.

Lake Jackson I have fished a few bass tournaments there, that’s not to far from me I’m west of Atlanta maybe an hour. Maybe if we can find some one who has some experience in calling and has done this before we can all get together and fix my problem in Alabama and work on yours also. I’m not going to be around next week I’m headed up to South Carolina but pm me and we can talk more about it.

I'm in northeast GA near Toccoa. I got serious about two years ago now. The first year I only got one. Last year I took six. They are harder to kill in GA than out west because there's so much game for them to eat and so much cover. They're not so desperate to beat the other predators to a prey sound and they can take their time to be extra cautious. If they miss a meal being cautious, it wont be long before the next opportunity. Not so out west. The couple I skinned out had lots of fat.

They may be harder to kill but they are also bigger! I took a 40lb female and a 45lb male last year. Here's a pic of my first. (Click on it and it will start a slide show.)

Learn as much as you can and get the gear to do it right. If you go before you're ready, you'll just educate them and make it harder next time.
Good luck! Have fun! Be safe!

Not in Georgia now but when I hunted in Taliaferro county throughout the 90s it was crawling with BIG ones. You are right about being well fed too. Never called one in, but had a few running shots in deer season with a flintlock!

That slide show is pretty cool Joe. I've got most of the gear I think I need. I got the new Georgia hunting regs yesterday and I saw that they legalized e-callers on WMAs. Clybel WMA is literally right around the corner from my house and I hear they're covered up with coyotes. I may have to go try it once squirrel season opens. Bigdaddy-that sounds good. Shoot me a pm and we can compare schedules. My Johnny Stewart is ready and I've got the 223 dialed in.

I live in lexington (near athens). Im new to predator hunting too( just started a month ago). Have any of you guys from georgia had any luck calling in dogs during the day? Ive tried about 6 times and I haven't had a bit of luck. Night is the best time for me. about 10- 2 a.m. is when I do most of my hunting.

Some how missed this post, I am in Calhoun Georgia it is off of I75 between Chatta TN and Atlanta GA. I have been hunting coyotes here for the last two years. I not killed one this year but I got five last year. Can't call one in the day, really can't call one anyting. Had the best luck howling at night with a light. And I am looking for anyone in my area with some experience or a place to hunt.

I just joined as well, I was lurking for about a week. I am between Dawsonville and Gainesville. We have some decent WMAs up here for coyote hunting. I have called in CO and you are right, you see them coming literally a mile off full steam right at you. First one I got I let get in to about 25 feet before I dispatched him, and he was still coming right at me. Out here, they sneak up and are very cautious. Still fun though.

Hey BigDaddy , you ever hunted Paulding Forest close to Dallas ? I've been hearing from a few friends that deer hunt over there and its said to hold a good population of coyotes. That place is on my list to check out as soon deer season ends.
