On thanksgiving day me and two of my cousins went out and we sat were a slough branches off teh river and forms an island that is mostly willows. We set and called for about 10 minutes when movement caught my eye and there was a mink runnign along the water line about 15 yards away he then sawm across teh slough and got out of the water about 5 feet from me. I stood up and he ran off but man what a rush!

That would be a pretty awesome sight! Alot of people don't realize what great predators the mink are. They're actually very efficient at killing and eating muskrats.

I've never had one come to a call, but, I did nearly get attacked by a "swarm" of about five mink once. I was a teenager at the time. It was the first summer I was allowed to take the boat out by myself. I had taken the boat to a remote bay near Hessle/Cedarville MI. There was a sand bottom and I was out of the boat swimming and gathering freshwater clams for fishing bait. I was anchored in about seven feet of water and probably twenty feet from the boat when I heard this awful chattering noise coming from towards the shore. I looked and saw these dark little heads sticking out of the water and weaving back and forth in a single file line through the water towards me. I never moved so fast through the water! The boat was a little fourteen foot aluminum v-haul with an outboard motor. I thought I would never get climbed up into that boat, but I did, and fairly quickly. As soon as I made it into the boat those mink caught up with me and started swimming circles around the boat like sharks. If I didn't do something quick they were going to find their way into the boat. I cranked up the motor and away they went.

I never have heard a good explanation for their behavior, nor have I heard of anyone witnessing any simular behavior.

Well sorry for rambling. I enjoyed your mink experience and thought you might enjoy mine.

Isn't this one of the reason we hunt? I feel sorry for people who sit at home and miss out on this kind of thing.

I think predator calling is like salt water fishing, or....a box of chocolates. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You never know what you are gonna get.

I've called in mink, weasels, lynx, martin, fisher all when I was targetting some thing else. I guess that says a lot about calling skills eh? everything but what I want.

One time while river fishing in northern B.C. for coho, I was in the river casting and my buddies were taking a break on shore. One of them had caught and killed a coho and had it on the beach next a log they were sitting on. I saw a mink hunting on the opposite bank. I lipsqueaked and he slid into the water, heading my way. He swam around me a couple of times and headed for my buddies. He ran up on the beach and grabbed the coho[ about 15 lbs.] by the lip and proceeded to drag it back into the river. It was hilarious, to see the determination in the beast. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Doing a little duck hunting on the river and heard a rabbit cying for his life only to find a mink had it. As we aproached closer to the mink I thought he would run but he never turned loose.
That mink must have been hungry.

I have worked on several mink farms. Did it everyday for 3 years while in school. Mink are a very curious animal and will check something out if it gets their attention. I have never heard of or thought of calling them but I can believe they would come. I have trapped a lot of mink. They are definitly a predator and I have lost a lot of muskrat to them.

Actually called quite a few in while stream fishing. Whenever I spotted a mink I would start to lip squeak. this alway called them into within feet of me or the canoe. They never seemed shy of coming so close to people. They would be as close 10 feet.
