Anyone ever call a hog?

I scouted a farm today that shows ample proof of wild pigs. Lots of rooting, and several active wallows, complete with mud on trees, and a swing set, if you can imagine. Owner tells me he sees them in his front yard at night sometimes, and the proof was everywhere. My question for those of you that call in hog country. Will they come in to a distress call, for a quick snack? I'm thinking I'll hunt this spot with my 06. I'm afraid my.17rem would only serve to swat with should one pop in on me...lol

you can grunt them like a buck just to get their attention but you cant call them like you would a coyote or an elk .17 rem is small .223 is what i use but only neck or vitals never the head just set up in a tree about 25 yds from the wallow and if it is legal to bait use soured grain in a post hole so they have to Root for it and if is not legal to hunt off a bait pile for hogs set it up and observe their patterns and you can normally getem on the other end of their trail like 300 yds away so you are just using the bait to establish a predictable pattern of travel they sure are fun to shoot and good sausage and ribs

Thanks for the reply YoteAssasin, I didn't really mean that I was going to attempt to call one intentionally, I was wondering if any of you guys in hog country ever have one show up to a rabbit distress looking for a snack. I will definately try the post hole idea though! Thanks, Ridge

Yes,
I have had one come in to a rabbit distress call. I am in east texas and we are in what you would call hog country. I am not sure if it was just curious about what all the racket was or if it was actually trying to find it and eat it. I quit calling as soon as I saw him so it wouldn't come any closer. I didn't shoot it because I was in a really good spot and I didnt want to scare off any yotes or cats because I was hunting a competition. It did come within about 40yds. of me though. If you try to set up on the pigs and you use your 30-06 you can shoot it behind the shoulder. If you happen to have one come in on you while you have your .17  and you want to shoot him wait until he gets broad side and shoot him in the ear. That should drop him in his tracks. I don't know much about the .17 but I know it works with a .22LR /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We use to raise hogs, and they will eat most anything, so I'm not surprised to hear they they will come to a call. If I was going to try and call one, I would use a piglet in distress call. If you can't find one, I would suggest finding a farmer that grows pigs commercially and stop by sometime when he is clipping the eye teeth or castrating them and tape some of the sounds. Believe me, momma will respond to these sounds. And when she does, I certainly wouldn't want to be unarmed.

While archery hunting near Hollister, CA the hunting was slow so I starting bunny calling. In the thick brush about 100 yards out I heard a loud snort and the brush started shaking. A big black boar with yellow tusks pops out of the brush at all of 10 yards....I was at full draw but chose not to shoot at a head on target. We stared at each other for about 5 seconds. He turned and went back into the heavy stuff without offering me a shot.

I tried after that but got no responses from pigs. I think it can be done, but there are more effective ways of hunting them.

Fellas, I really appreceiate the replys, and you have confirmed my concerns that one could come flying in on an unexpecting caller, armed way to light for hogs. After reading your stories, I'll be prepared, just in case.

The wild hogs in South Florida will come to a piglet in distress quite often. Haven't had them respond to anything else yet.

I carry my Glock 20 (10mm) as a backup in case of bears or hogs when I'm "varmint" hunting.

Lately bald eagles are giving me fits when I sound a rabbit in distress... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ridgeviewer,

Shot quite a few hogs in TX before we moved. This boar was 200 + and was taken with a .243. I would not use a 17 on a hog unless you are shooting piglets..! In the shoulder they have a gristlely (sp?) sheath that can be up to an 1" or more thick. This bore's sheath was all scared up by tusk fights with other hogs. I took a bunch of hogs while in Texas. Only hunted at night and absolutely loved hunting these grunters! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This one is hanging in our den now.

Goodluck! Paul

Wow! Nice hog Dead Dog! Rest assured, I'll never try a hog with a .17 rem...lol But I sure will be lookin for a big boy like that one.

You might try a hog feeding frenzy tape, I know they have it for the Preymaster but I'm not sure if they have a tape of that sound. I've heard they come in a running when you play that tune for'em. Your best bet would be to just find out their routine and ambush them, remember to play the wind cause them suckers got a good nose.

I have had pigs respond to my calling on more than one occasion. Dont know if they are curious or hungry, but they will come. The 17 is a little light but the 06 should work just fine. Good luck.

I can't thank you guys enough for the replys! Though Hogs are not totally uncommon to southern ohio, stumbling into a situation like I have found, is. To set the stage, I was in gander mountain picking up a few items better than a year ago. This older gentleman was asking a pimpled clerk a question about scoping an Encore 209x50 with see through rings. Anyhow the clerk says, "can't do it" with a bit of an attitude. r It really sat badly with me, because you could just tell the old fella was a good guy. So I spoke up and said "I have mine set up that way" This punk kid says "Huh Thats news to me, and I work at a gun shop" So I politely explained that he needed to get back to dusting the shelves...lol
Introductions were made and I took my new friend Archie, over and showed him the weaver base, and rings he needed for the Encore. We got to shootin the bull for the next hour and a half...lol Archie told me he was gonna buy an Encore soon, that he really appreceiated my help, and he asked for my Phone number in case of more questions. So better than a year later Archie calls out of the blue and ask if he could see how I had my encore, and .17 rem set up, and invites me down to his farm. I insisted archie and his wife shoot both guns. The rest is history, I now have permission to hunt his 2 farms in southern ohio. Sometimes it just pays to help a guy out, and I certainly appreceiate you guys helpin me with the hog info! I'll keep you all posted with results, Ridge

I have had pigs come in to a rabbit distress whistle. Most were sows but a few were boars. The boars seem to be more carefull about coming in full tilt and some of them just sit in the bushes really close and grind their tusks.
Just another trick to have up your sleeve.

Ridgeviewer,

Sorry, I've never called hogs but, I was once on a hog hunt with a friend who got a bad shot on one that started squeeling something fierce. Several other hogs came out of the bushes and attacked the squeeler something fierce - like a feeding frenzy. Really was something else. I would think a call would do the job!

Bow Hunter

I'll tell ya guys, I can't wait to get back down to hunt this farm. I have a main trail crossing above a very steep, deep, brushy, box valley. The trail leads through mature oaks, to 2 wallos, and is also used by the deer bigtime. I'm gonna set my treestand and bowhunt it next week.

Bow Hunter, what do you shoot?
