I've been looking for a very good bench rest for testing loads and general shooting fun. I am considering "The Rock", but sure would like to hear some first-hand knowledge of the product. Midsouth Shooters Supply has them on sale for $124.99. Anyone know anything??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Caldwell makes three different versions of this rest.

The Rock BR 1000 (Best)
The Rock BR (Better)
The Rock (Good)

If you are looking at the least expensive model, aka The Rock, it can be had from www.midwayusa.com for $64.99 right now.

I have "The Rock" and "The Rock BR 1000" models. Both are good rests. The BR models are a little easier to adjust, and a LOT heavier, but they're all adequate for normal range work.

Go to their website @ http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/caldwell.html
and have a look. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have two of the Rocks. They are adequate rest. I use them when going on PD shoots and for standard sighting in. When I really want to test a load I have a heavier sinclair.

I stepped up from an ancient Hoppe's rest to the Caldwell and I really notice the difference in stability. I also like the forearm stop on it--helps to keep the rifle positioned consistently. The only problem I've seen is the bag is pretty shallow so if you don't remove the front swivel (I do when doing serious bench work) it can hit the plate that holds the bag down. Overall, I like the rest really well, though. tt

Hidalgo,

It is the "The Rock BR" 15 1/2 lb base model that Midsouth shooter's supply has on sale for $124.99. This same model is $189.99 on the Caldwell website. The ad is in the April 2007 Predator Xtreme Magazine. Think I'll order one, sounds like a good deal.

I have a Rock BR and for the money it's a very good rest. I did have to chase the threads on the column lock ring to get it put together, not a large problem but if I didn't have the correct tap on hand it would have been an issue.

I have a b.r. and a witchita. both are good rest, but I tend to like the witchita a little better and the prices are about the same, give or take a few bucks.

I have the Rock BR model, I gave 119.00 or so for it about a year ago. The bag that comes with it is cheesy, I need to replace it.

For the money, they are a good rest.

To make them a great rest (with a little more effort):
1)replace the bag
2)pin the windage adjustments
