Anyone have a savage action wrench?

Ok, first lets make sure im not an idiot and am beating this thing tighter instead of loosening it.

Im beating on the top of the wrench as seen here. Ive distorted my wrench, bent the handle on my vice tightening it and blown through 2 sets of wood blocks, heated with torch and am on day 2 of soaking with wd40. And the best i get is spinning the barrel in the blocks.

This is just dumb. Or i am. In any case help!

And ignore the mess, my shop is on dirt floors until next month. Right now its just massive storage.

What you're doing is turning the barrel nut and action which are essentially one piece. You need an action wrench. Brace the wrench handle against something immovable so the action can't turn. Then unscrew the barrel nut and separate it from the action. If the thing is still real tight you can also put some heat on it.

You need an action wrench for that.

What you are doing is moving the action and barrel nut against the barrel.

You are trying to move the barrel nut in the right direction but you must also hold the receiver from trying to follow.

Also, is this the first dismount of this barrel from this action? Removals from a factory install can be a bear as the common theory is that some of the salts from blueing are still present and in the threads and acting like a defacto thread locker.

When you get it all apart, clean things pretty well and apply anti-seize.

Best luck and best regards

You need action wrench, vise & barrel nut wrench. Use the half inch square in barrel nut wrench to attach a big breaker bar to loosen barrel nut.
I've been told that you can lay your receiver on a carpeted floor & arrange your barrel nut wrench in a position that if you stand on it you can break it loose. Sounds plausible but have not tried it myself.
Personally, I dont like beating on the wrench with a mallet. Too many things can go wrong.......
Looking at your work station, you are way more orderly than I am. When mounting my barrel to blocks I slip a piece of heater hose over barrel to get a good grip on barrel.
Also if you try the on the floor & stand on it method, remove the trigger from the action first.

I do not use a vise. I attach the action wrench and lay it on cardboard with the handle to the left. Then I attach the barrel nut wrench so that it is angled just above the floor. I step on the action wrench handle and then on the barrel nut wrench. When I transfer weight to the barrel nut wrench, it cracks loose.

Thanks all, i thought id be able to pop it loose but i also used to think i could fly if i tried hard enough. Admittedly that was a few weeks ago

Ill give you a call later jim.

Indy i've never needed to use barrel blocks in the years of doing my swaps. I have always been able to break them loose simply by sitting my wheeler action vise on the floor and putting my weight on it with one foot and putting the barrel nut wrench on the barrel and using my weight to break them loose, (i'm about 170lbs).

I don't shoot bolt actions any more and have been going to list these parts for sale but haven't got around to it yet. Good luck

Ya don't need an action wrench. Maybe use a torch on that barrel nut thought I know I've had a few that we're tight as [beeep]! The hog hunter I just to apart I just pulled on hard( admittedly I'm 320 lbs). And it came right off. I used a pipe wrench on that crapy smooth one though.
