anyone have a shepherd scope?? good-- -- bad

I've seen a couple of 'em, the first was a First Generation Shepherd, the other being a newer one.

The glass was actualy very clear, and using the small cirlces, I didn't have any problem hitting on at 600 yards with either an M14 or a M70 308 Winchester.

Good Luck with your decision!

They are made in Japan by Hakko {some were made by Jatco, the same outfit that makes Tasco.} I would definately add a few more dollars and buy a better quality scope. With regards to the reticle, bullet drop compensated reticles work but only with a specific load/bullet weight. Most hunters find the clutter that you see when you look in the scope an unessecary distraction and get rid of it for a standard crosshair. The dual adjustment setup while novel in design cost alot of light transmission. You just cant put things in the field of view of a scope and not have it get in the way of light coming thru the scope.

I have five of them,Use one rifle mounted with one regularly.
They do what they say,but you have to understand them through a little practice just like any other ranging scope..First one I mounted on a 220 swift, sighted it in with one shot as the brochure claims. Killed four coyotes that same day in Oklahoma from 358 yds to 430.Mine are bright and clear edge to edge .Never had any trouble with fogging, return to zero or staying zeroed.Dropped one and bent the bell down.Went to Dan Shepherds house and he gave me a new one.I have had some of these for almost fifteen years now. Will take them anyday over Leupold of the same vintage. Don't be overly concerned with who manufactured it.Tasco has the abiltiy to build the poorest to some of the best and quite often claims of who the manufacturer is are hearsay and inaccurate or change regularly. Just depends on what specs are required.I agree with the clutter issue, but anyscope with rangefinding in it will have the same issue. As far as light trasmission affected by rangefinding,I wonder since some of the highest light transmission scopes out there have rangefinding.(nightforce).Biggest drawback is they ae pricey and probably will not retain resale as well as others.

I would not waste my money on these.

Steve is absolutely right....no two ways about it, these scopes are junk.

I might add that Tasco has never made a quality scope and probably never will but they have a niche for those too cheap to buy anything else.

To compare the shepard scope to a Leupold is like comparing a volkswagon to a cadillac.

If you insist on using inferior optics I wouldn't worry about the quality of the rifle, bother with reloading or anything else for that matter that might increase accuracy.

Dang me, guess the first run that John made were the only good ones. Was claimed the first gen's used Unertl glass.

I haven't seen any of the recent stuff though, so guess I shouldn't be giving my .02$, but the couple that I have seen, weren't as bad as folks say above.

But, IF it is tasco, then I would stay away from it too. I've been considering a new scope for my 10 year old son for his first rifle this year, and I've been considering a Luppy. Maybe just a VX-I, but still a Luppy. Think I'll stay away from the "Rifleman" series of Luppy scopes, they may be a bit too cheap too. Maybe spend as much as for a VX-II. 2-7X33 maybe to keep it light.

I got one on a trade. Came with the rifle. It took me all of one range session to decide I didn't like it. They may be for some people, I just didn't care for the clarity or the clutter. But on a good note, I swapped the gun and scope for a Kubota lawn tractor.

I had one about 12-13 years ago. I used it for about 4 seasons. I had trouble with the secondary reticle moving at times under recoil. 2 of my friends had one & one of those had trouble as well. I don't know about you, but I felt that 2 problem scopes out of 3 was not acceptable at all.
The system works, but the system is no good if the scopes aren't reliable. I traded it off & would never entertain another unless I absolutely knew that they are more reliable
& I have not heard anything at all to indicate that these scopes are now reliable. So that puts me in the definate NO catagory.
