I cannot get a accurate answer to this question. The only time you can coyote hunt on NC game lands is when another season of some animal is open. So there is no coyote hunting when everything else is closed.

So...can I hunt coyotes with a .223 when the small game season is open? I can find nothing in the manual that says large caliber centerfire guns can only be carried during big game season. But I dont know for sure.

Where are you at?
Salisbury here. Asheville here. My question is can I carry the .223 when deer season is closed?

Yes, on gamelands you can use any rifle as long as there's some game season open. Starting with goose or dove season, early Sept., till the last day of Feb. The rest of the year g'lands are closed. Except during turkey season, then it's shotguns only on g'lands.

Where about's in Asheville? What g'lands do you hunt? I'm out in Swannanoa.

Leicester area. I hunt the game lands out this way up the French Broad in the Alexander area. I hunt private land mostly, but I can walk from my house and be on the government.
