just started trapping again. aint trapped for 20 years, and at that time there were no bobcats around. now there everywhere. Ive caught several coon and just about everything but that darned cat. ive seen several sets of tracks and i know there are at least two jueveniles in the area and a dominate female. i dont have a clue what to use for bait. ive seen there tracks coming right up to my coon sets that had fish in them but they aint fallin for it. any help would be apprecaited

Dirt hole sets will work for cats with a #2 or #3. Gland lure or urine will work. If you can get a rabbit and tear up some of fur and place it in the hole and scatter a little hair around that will also work. A whole mouse in the hole would be good bait too. Cats often need a sight attractant since their smell is not as accute as a coyote or fox. That is why the rabbit fur works well. You can also hang a feather by a thread over the trap. The feather moving in the breeze will get the cats attention and bring it close enough to smell the bait.

Try a double set. Set one in front of the original. If you don't already, try putting a little grass in front of the bait/lure hole, so he has to investigate a little closer. Also, fencing works really well for bobcats, forcing them to step on your pan instead of to the side or over.

Hang a dead pigon from a tree branch over the top of a double set with a funnel or a dead rabbit staked down inside a covey set or some people call it a canopy set.

By the right front paw? Like this???

This female cat was caught using lure and a piece of rabbit fur put in the dirt hole set like the one Yellowhammer described...

What you can't see is the big male that is 25 yards behind me in an identical setup.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

These are my oldest boy's catches two weekends ago.......James L.

i caught a few cats this season using a chicken wire cubby. it worked VERY well. i took a piece of standard chicken wire 3' long and rolled it into a tube about 10" in diameter. wired the bait in the center and covered it with cedar branches. added some call lure to the top and bedded 1.75 coils at each opening. it worked like a charm. my son and i scored pretty regular with it.

Last cat I got was caught with a can of sardines.

I dug a mock rabbit hole by the base of a tree, dumped the sardines in the hole, and hung the sardine can on a branch over my trap.....

Here is one that I actually caught in a set for coons. It was in a 1 1/2 double coil that I had set on a rotten log that was across a creek. The log was soft enough that I could make a hollow for the trap and covered with shredded rotten wood. The log did not go all the way across the creek. I set a sardine on the water side of the trap with stepping sticks on each side of the trap. The first night, the sardine was gone, without disturbing the trap. So, a put a sardine on each side of the trap. The next morning, I had this cat.

Notice, he's all wet.
