Anyone shoot Tac, X-Terminator or AA2230?

Reason I ask is that Lock Stock and Barrel in Valentine NE. is blowing out some of this powder at some great prices. They have 8 pound kegs for under $100.00 and they pay the haz-mat on order over 20 lbs (from memory)

Just thought I would pass it along. I put in an order for six 8 pound kegs this morning! I love it! Getting a big box full of gun powder is like........ Christmas!

I inquired Ramshot about loads for .223 with a 60 grain V-Max, this is what they sent me back, hope it helps!

This is what I got back from Ramshot:

We suggest our TAC powder.

Bullet weight: 60grains

START load: 22.0grains (2775-2875Fps)

Maximum load: 24.5grains (3100-3200Fps)

TAC and X-term are some of the best ball powders on the market. They are consistent and less temp. sensitive than many others.

John - I have a jug of each that I bought on a whim at a gun show, but have never opened.

When this thread got going, I looked at the loading data on the Ramshot and the two powders look almost identical in burning rate.

I have ~10,000 pieces of new 223 IMI brass that I want to load with 55gr BKs or V-Maxs, and a 1050 set up with Redding BR dies just waiting for the winter.

I ran both powders through "Load from a Disk" for thr 223/55gr combination, and they show Xterminator to be a teeny bit slower than Tac, even though the Ramshot website lists Ext before Tac?

In real practice, what do you find between the two of them in burning rate and would you recommend one over the other for the 223/55gr combination?

CatShooter, we have never been able to establish a good answer to the burn rate question. About all I can say is that they are different. Even when shooting bullets of the same weight by different manufacturers, I have noticed that one or the other will give higher velocity when the pressure hits 60 Kpsi. I will be quite honest, if our supply of one runs low, we will switch data to the other.

When TAC first hit the market, the folks at Western Powders sent us a 25lb poly bag for testing. The most amazing thing we noticed was that it shows about half the pressure change from 0 F to 100 F as H-335.

Burn rate comparison charts rate X-Terminator as having a faster burning rate than TAC. X-Terminator seems to have a burning rate a little faster than W748 amd TAC is about the same as H335. In other words there is not alot of difference.

I got some TAC today I think I will try it with some 75gr AMax and 77gr Sierra in my NM AR and see what it does.

Burn rate comparison charts don't mean doodley squat - they are all different, and they are all over the place.

I posted this in the thread below just a day or two ago...

"There are many of these powder rate charts around.

I remember the first one I came across back in the days before the flintlock /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, I thought it was a blessing from God-da.

Then I looked it over and some discrepancies came up - hmmmmmm - OK, maybe it was a badd day for God-da.

Then I came across another one, and it didn't match the first one - hmmmmmm - OK, which one was the "real" one.

And then another one, and none of them matched each other - Oh, they were close. They didn't list Bullseye as being slower than BlueDot or anything that far "off"... but there were lots of position changes that were two to five places off.

NEVER use one of these "burn rate charts" for loading decisions - they make nice wall decorations when hung upside down (so you can't read them ).

In this chart... they list BenchMark as being #86 and H-322 as #89 - no way in Hades is that possible - I have shot over 50 pounds of BenchMark, and 70 pounds of H-322, and any fool that shoots these powders knows that H-322 is about 3% faster than BM...

... same with W-748 and H-335. This chart lists W748 in position #92 and H-335 in position #96 - same "no way in Hades" thing... they are reversed in the wrong position on this chart, as are many others."

I have used all three and continue to use TAC & X-TERM..I never had good luck with AA2230 in my ARs, however I do very well with AA2520 in the .223 caliber but only in certain rifles..I like TAC best of all, my 2 bolt riles & 3 ARs shoot it well, and believe it or not, I get good results from X-TERM in my CZ 527 .204 Ruger.. Another advantage is price as I buy my powders from MidSouth and TAC is cheaper than the others with the exception of the good old days when you could buy 8# jugs of WC846 for around $50 to $60..That WC846 is the best I've ever used in .223..
FWIW my best shooter is my Rem SPS Tactical .223, that rifle will shoot just about any load under 1 MOA and most around .5 MOA and many of them to roughly the same POI.
