Anyone Shoot the savage 220 shotgun?

If so can you share your groups or results. I am shooting the remington accutips 2 3/4 and tried 3 inch and they shoot worst than my muzzloader.

I was at the range today and the guy beside me was shooting one with the rem accutips. At 50 yards it did very well. At 100 yards, not so much.

I would try the Federal's with the purple tipped barnes bullets 5/8 oz. Those seemed to work pretty well.

That's my results. I tried shooting like a rifle and then holding the forend from jumping. Same results. Savage claims sub 3/4 groups at 100. I don't believe my gun will.

I don't have the gun, but my mossberg 500 loves the hornaday sst's. I took a doe at a 147 yards last year with it. I sold my muzzle loader after i got done using them with such good results.

I called Savage today and they claim that it groups under warranty at 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches at 100 yards. Take 3 shots and use the two furthest holes away from each other. Measure from the center of each hole. My gun shoots this, but when i bought the gun i was told from savage the groups were under 1 inch. I am trying to get my hands on federal barnes expander 3 inch and test. They will tell you that you must have the gun in the shoulder and pressure down and rearward on the forend or the barrel will jump.

I Shoot the barnes 3" Expander in mine. Did a couple tests with a 1/2 dozen slugs and the Barnes was best (which is good cause I like them best). Had it for a year now. Took it out last weekend and tested it out to 200 yards. Its "hunting accurate" out to 200 yards from the BENCH. I'd be happy to put it up against any of the guns people around her hunt with for slug hunting deer.

All in all, slug guns SUCK for deer hunting. But its what we have. I'm strongly considering going back to the smoke pole for whitetail in Iowa.

But if I have to shoot a slug gun, it will be the savage 220.

Mahamari can you tell us what you got for groups at 100 yards with the barnes. I hear they dont make them anymore and now federal has their own version tipped or something like that.

also did you ever test the remington accutips?

thanks.

I bought one of these guns last year after reading alot of good reviews on the internet. I tried the federal barnes and remington accutips. The farthest I was able to sight the gun in was 75 yards, and the best group came from 2 3/4 accutips. All three holes were touching in the center of the target.

I grew up hunting with an 870 so to me this accuracy out of a slug gun blew me away. Accuracy for slugs has come a long way, but to expect a 1" group at 100 is asking alot.

By far the most accurate gun I have ever hunted with and the price is very reasonable as well.

Federal no longer makes the 20g with Barnes. I was looking for some because that's what my H&R Ultra Slug shoots well and what I think kills the best. I thought the Accu-tips sucked at killing, though they shot the best.

I've read this a few times but haven't seen anything out by Federal or Barnes saying the same. Federal still lists this ammo on its website and Cabelas has it for sale even with a mail in rebate good through December of 2013.

I bought 10 boxes of it last year because it was hard to find so I'm good for a bit.

As to the accuracy of it, I haven't shot it at 100 yards in almost a year so it would be a guess as to inch size. I will say I wasn't super happy with the groups but when I made myself realize it was a slug not a centerfire it became an acceptable group. I want to say about 1 1/2" - 2" to be safe. I shot it a couple weeks ago at 150 and 200 yards. It was accurate and consistent enough to kill a deer at those ranges if the bullet had enough gusto to do it.

You know your a Gun Nut when you start talking about bedding the action on your sluggun! A gun that shoots right out of the box is great but look at the joy you get from taking a so so shooter and turning it into a tack driver.

Can you post a link? The only thing I can find in 20g are the non-tipped. The tipped Barnes are the ones I was referring to. If I could find some, I'd stock up.

Ok, we are talking two different rounds then. I've been referring to the non tipped.

I've never actually tried the tipped, though I would like too.
