Looking at the Cooper Rifles out of Montana in the .204 Ruger. If you own one I would like to hear what you think about it. Or any of the Varmint calibers in a Cooper Rifle ? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I sell Cooper rifles. Does that count? They are very well crafted rifle, very pleasing to the eye and they generally shoot very well. My overall opinion, while certainly not negative, is you can get a rifle that will shoot just as good for half the money. If you want a good shooting rifle, look at a heavy barreled Tikka (not available yet in .204 to my knowledge although Tikka is making them) or a CZ 527 kevlar varmint. I certainly have nothing against Cooper and if you buy one you are getting one heck of well crafted firearm. I just would not pay that much for single shot .204 in this lifetime.

Outside of the Tikka is there anything else you like? I have been looking into a Remington XR-100, which I really like the feel of, but the reviews are mixed. The Savage Longe Range Precsision was just rated very higly in Field and Stream by Petzal, but every time I pick up a Savage it fells like I am holding a fencepost. The Coopers feel nice in the hand a suppoedly shoot exceptionally weel, but they aren't easy ont the wallet.

I have a cooper in 20 vartarg, it may be that it just so happens to be the right fit for my frame, but Ive not handled another rifle that felt so "right", couldnt be happier. Everything about the rifle is just quality. They are more money than the average rifle but I feel the price is intensely modest for what you get in a varminter. I heard there was a small price increase, but my local dealer had coopers at $950 which is not by any stretch impossibly expensive considering what you can drop on a rifle that *may* need some tweaking. The resale on a cooper is incredibly solid as well. I like to think about owning it as more of a rental, if the day comes where it has to be sold, its not going to be sold at much of a loss nor with any difficulty. Cant say that for too many other rifles under $1k out there, or maybe you can, cooper just seems like a good investment, not so much to make money on but certainly one where the cost of owning it is very little when it comes time to sell.

goody523: I am shooting a couple of Savages in .223 now. Both are exceptional at puching one holers and feel great against the shoulder. I am thinking of the Savage 12FV in .204, but I have been looking for that last rifle. You know the last one you ever buy !!! (Thats what I've said on the last two). The close ups of the Coopers look very nice, the wood looks incredible and the accuracy is suppose to be outstanding. But the money is somewhat of a issue. Thanks for the replys.

Coopers are great rifles and are good looking to boot.
I do not currently own one but I have a Kimber 84M in .204 Ruger that is very nice. I have not shot it much yet but it appears to be very accurate.

People pay more for a single shot receiver because they are better. Just look at the Remington 700 action, the single shot, solid bottom receiver action(40X), is worth about $1000 more than the repeaters.

Along with several others, I have two Cooper 204's. One is a Montana Varminter, the other is a Classic. They both shoot very respectable groups. Both do best with SIE 39 gr. bullets. However, one likes H335, the other W748. Does a Copper shoot better than a lower cost rifle, probably not. However, if you enjoy great craftsmanship and a good looking rifle that just happens to shoot well, go for it. You won't be sorry.

I didn't even realize that CZ had the Kevlar model - most things I have read on CZ's say guys are pretty happy with them. Does anyone know if the .204 has that atrocious magazine hanging out 3 inches below the bottom of the receiver? In pictures on the web it looks like the .223 has it, but the 22/250 is just about a flush mount. I can't for the life of me figure out why they do that with their rifles (even their .17's have the mag hanging way out the bottom). Maybe some people like that look, but I'm not one of them.

The Coopers on the other hand... there isn't anything that doesn't look nice about those.

As long as your using the Cooper for hunting/varmints I think you'll be more than happy. They are excellent looking rifles and for the most part shoot great. I have a Cooper action/Kreiger on a 22PPC .100 short that shoots pretty consistant .300's, which I think is fantastic for a factory action.

My problem with the Cooper's is for what you'll pay for it, you could every easily put another $2-300 and have a custom action rifle.

Just my .02

I have the cz american and the varmint in 204 they are the best rifles i have ever owned for the money. Very accurate.

I don't plan to sell any of my Coopers anytime soon in hopes of finding something better for the money.

WSD: Are you saying you're a Cooper dealer?

Well I don't have a Coper in 204 but I do in 22-250AI. It shoot great providing I feed it quality handloads.Trigger leaves much to be desired. I had a gunsmith take it down to 1 1/2. I think it has some how improved on its own.I can get under 1/2 MOA with quality ammo. When I shoot this BBL out I want a 1in 8 Krieger or Hart, not certain. But I want to shoot the long bullets.
