I just ordered a new Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 22-250 yesterday it has a 24" 1 - 14" twist rate barrel and black gray laminate stocks it is my 50th birthday present to myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Is there anyone here that shoots one of these or has experiences with this rifle?
I own an older Sako L579 Forrester in 22-250. Nice heavy barrel. Shoots 1/2 inch groups at 100 with 55 gr vmaxes. I'm on a sub-caliber kick these days, so I don't shoot the 250 as much. Old or new, Sako makes a great rifle!
I own many Sako rifles. All of my Sakos are the older
AI through AV actions. I don't like the newer Sakos. Thats not to say they won't shoot. I can tell you that I've never
seen a Sako that was not accurate.I've got a Sako Classic
Grade 7MM Mag mfg in the early 80s the rifle has been accurized By Ellis Simon. and will put 5 shots under.500
MOA if I do my part. Good for a sporter weight mag.
I have a Sako heavy barrel 22-250 on the AIII action and my best 5 shot group is .230. I have the same rifle in 220 Swift that shoots in the high .300s low .400s I'm shure the new Sako are fine, I just don't like them. Let us know how yours shoots once you wring it out. Grizz
Well the gun is here and it is even nicer than I remembered one issue is when I asked the barrel length they had told me 24" it is only 21 1/4" long which balances nice but I am concerned about the velocitiy drop from such a short barrel.
They also shipped the wrong high and color Optiloc scope rings so I'm sending these back and the correct ones should be in the mail tomorrow.
Oh well over all I am so far very happy now to try and get to the range as soon as possible.
You got a great gun and dont worry at all about the barrel length. Nothing you ever shoot with it will know the difference. I have had several Sako's and traded them all but one. Wish I had everyone of them back... I was smart enough to keep one of the first batch made in 6PPC with a single digit serial number.
Altough I think the older ones have better quality, I shoot a model 75 in 22-250 and I can tell you is one of the rifles I enjoy shooting most. Don´t know about their most recent models but I´m sure they all are shooters.
I finally got out to the range the first thing I noticed was the muzzle flash I was loaded with 37grs Varget 1ith 40gr V-Max bullets.
I'm thinking I'm going to try a faster powder and move up to 50gr or 55gr bullets.
I had mounted one of my VX-111 4.5-14X 40mm scopes onto the rifle first shot was exactly 1" low at 25 yards moved out to 50 yards were the bullet hit dead center of the 1' bull.
Moved out to 100 yards and even though I was cleaning the bore after every shot I shot a 1" 5 shot group.
I'm thinking/hoping that with a little load work and the right bullet this rifle is going to give me 1/2" groups...
When you open the bolt after firing to eject the spent casing the bolt is a bit stiff to lift due to the bolt cocking when raised this makes for a fairly heavy bolt lift this is one issue I hope smooths out once the rifle is broken in.
Anyway as of now I am totally happy with this rifle...
Ok was at the range again this afternoon with the 21 1/4" barreled Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 22-250 after the major muzzle flash I experienced with the Varget loads I decided to try 52gr Speer HP bullets with 34grs IMR3031 which gives a very nice average of 3650fps velocity.
I had fired 30 rounds from the gun cleaning after ever shot for the first 20 shots then after every second shot and had slowly adjusted the vertical on the scope when I did the top 4 shot group.
I'm thinking I have an amazingly accurate new gun... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
