Anyone shooting the Barnes Varmint Grenade?

Can anyone give a performance report on these bullets? Was thinking of shooting them in my 223 to try and save some fur. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I shoot them from a 223 and 22-250 and regardless what anyone tells you they are great for fur. I have yet to have one pass through a coyote. Ive heard people say they arent accurate and will cause damage but that makes me wonder how many things theyve actually shot with them. This is a young dog I shot with a 223 at about 30 yars with the barnes varmint grenade. The bullet entered above his knee and killed him stone dead. The bloody side is the entry and the other side is unharmed and the leg is still in tact. If I would have shot a coyote at that range with a vmax Im pretty sure the leg would be no more and the chest would have a massive hole on the back side of the leg. I think they are a great bullet for a fur hunter.

I had a buddy reload some for a Wyoming prarie dog hunt last fall. They were awesome good shooters and fairly cheap. Havent tried them for yotes but I think I will try them after seeing those pics. I have a few left over. I will let you know how they do.

Anything that disinegrates when hitting a grape probably will give you a lot of spashes on coyotes. Check out this video.

They might work really well though. Maybe we can get some more field tested results and opinions.

I shoot them for groundhogs out of my Savage Mod 12 .223. They are explosive and I have had them pass through some and stay inside others. Either way nothing walks. I loaded them with Varget powder and found that the heavier the powder charge the less accurate they were. That's just out of my one gun though. Good Luck.

I have not shot them, but out of my model 12 I get better accuracy with Benchmark as compared to varget with bullets lighter than 50 grains.

I bought some 35gr (all I could find at the time). Couldn’t find any load data for that weight for 223. I loaded up some light loads and shot some stuff, water bottles, small pumpkins, apples, paper etc. I found them to be very explosive but not any more so than the v-max.
It’s not really a fair test because the Varmint Grenade’s were behind a light load and the v-max was a developed load I use to hunt with and a heaver bullet.
I would love to get some in a 55 to 60gr and try them in my 223 and 22-250.
They claim velocities not a problem but I would like to push some out there at 3000+ fps and see for my self. I would think they would be fur friendly because they seem to disintegrate completely with very little provocation but I was shooting this stuff at 50yds and don’t know what would happen when velocity drops off.
