Anyone use an Accu-Wedge????

All,

I just put together my first AR over the summer. Love the [beeep] out of it. Since day one however, there has been a little "play, side to side" in the upper attaching to the lower. This has given me some fits with scope mounting as you can guess because sometimes the scope will look perfect, but the next time it will be canted to the side, until I "jiggle" it just a little. Can this wobble affect accuracy and would an Accu-Wedge fix the issue and possibly tighten up the groups?

Here is an 8 shot group I did the other night. This is a load that I am still developing and shows great possibilities:

Thanks for the input!

A foam earplug will do the same thing.

In theory, play between the upper and lower won't affect accuracy.
However it can have a mental effect on the shooter, if it's bothering you it will mess with your group.

If the wiggle is so bad that it causes the scope to look canted, that would be more than I could stand.

If you don't mind me asking what brand of upper and lower do you have.

I used a Accu-wedge once and it did what I was supposed to. However make sure to trim it down, it took me awhile to figure out that I needed to trim it.

I use the wedges in all mine and even made a wedge from a rubber stopper for one prob lower the accu wedge didn't fix.

Fred, AKA, Knockemdown, posted a neat gadget in a thread not long ago that make the wedges look like crap.

I'll see if I can find that thread and post link to that cool slop fixer.

I use the wedge in one rifle then just use the foam ear plugs in two others. Works just as good. No notice in accuracy but the slop is gone. Feels better hand.

I have a Model1 Upper on top of a Palmetto Lower. Now, my cousin has the identical setup and his is rock solid.. luck of the draw!

As was said, the accuwedge or similar shouldn't hurt your accuracy or help it. It will however feel a bit better to the shooter. The optics and upper receiver are all separate from the lower so it really shouldn't have much effect on down range accuracy. Perhaps it is trigger pull? What scope/mount/trigger do you currently have?

Scope is a cheap Center Point 4x16. The mount is a Rock River Arms Canteliver.

I was more wondering if the play could have an affect on the accuracy since it had that sloppy feel to it. I'll try the foam plugs and see if that makes it "feel" better.

Thanks!

It has more to do with the quality of the scope, and the barrel being matched with the right ammunition. I used an Accu-wedge on my M4 that I used for competition, but did NOT use one on my Long Range Precision competition gun that I use out to 850 yards, and I do just fine. The M4 with the chrome lined barrel is no where near as accurate as my bull target barrel, but then again I am only using it out to 450 yards, so it doesn't have to cut the same hole.

For taking out the play between the upper and lower, aside from bedding, this works the best:
A strip of blue Masking tape, take 2 minutse to install and last several outings.
The Wedge only removes up and down play, but does not help side to side wobble, the tape takes all the play out.

The accu-wedge has zero to do with accuracy. All it does is remove the "play" between the upper and lower receiver.

On many of the "high speed, low drag" forums, the "operators" all frown upon the accu-wedge, claiming it will fall apart or break apart and jam up your FCG.

I've had one in my M4 for about 2 years and it still looks brand new.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't think (at least deep down) that the play would affect accuracy. So... onto some true load development.

The load in this pic is the first test of H335 @25.3gr and some Hornady 55gr sp.

Time to hit the range.

the Jp pin will definitely tighten upper/lower flop,
works great.
the downside is having to keep more wrenches with you to remove it in the field,, an Allen and a screwdriver.

I tried the wedge once, trimmed, fit, trim, fit, threw it in the garbage. I learned to love that little bit of slop.

I just had to try this and yesterday I did. It works.

I know the wiggle doesn't make any difference in accuracy. I just don't like it. Real rifles aren't supposed to wiggle in the middle.

for what its worth I like the accuwedge...it does take the slop out of a couple of rifles that I have...but what I really like is the lower from tactical innovations that has an allen screw under the grip that you turn until it is tight, replace the grip and the upper and lower fit like they were made together.
