Anyone used a 20g scatter gun for yotes?

I was just given a 20g remmy 870, made in 1954. I've never even shot a 20g at anything over than clay. Is it enough for close yotes at maybe 20-30yds or less?

It almost never comes up that a shotty is needed for yotes in eastern MT anyway, but a bad day yote hunting can be a good day bird hunting. I thought I might at least drag it along to yote stands and up my chances of pheasants on the way back, that is IF it's up to dropping yotes as well. Any thoughts?

A number of people shoots yotes with 20 ga on here. It will work, but what is the choke on the gun?

If you reload this is the time for BB size shot to get more pellets in there.

My 20 ga, like yours, is only 2 3/4 chambers. Sucks because a company makes a 3" BB load for varmints and predators.

It's just a full choke barrel. I just noticed the slide has been cracked and glued as well, so it'll have to go. I thought I might put a synthetic stock and slide on it, and maybe even new a barrel/choke. Anyone have any furniture/tube/choke recommendations? I was thinking Magpul furniture and...

Gun parts America (numerich arms) for old furniture. 20 ga doesn't come in #4 buck only #3 and 00. It works just fine.

I changed out an old beater 870 12 ga. to synthetic forearm and butt. Should be able to find them for a 20 pretty easy. Try Sportsman Guide, Cheaper than Dirt, etc. Google it.

Thanx guys. Perhaps I should be more specific. I was wondering what guys around here are using on their 870s. Midway, Brownells, etc all have a zillion reviews of everything, mostly by people who don't seem to know what they're doing, and none seem to be from yote hunters. I'd like to hear what guys are using on their 870s and really liking (or hating, for that matter). What works... what doesn't?

I personally used a 20g 870 for a few years and it would work but it wasn't ideal.. I had a few jump up and run off.

I ended up just getting a coyote shotgun and putting the Blackhawk stock on it to absorb the recoil and it's been great and i don't care if it gets scratched, dented or other things... It's for Coyotes.. lol

I've used an old H&R 20ga single shot full choke with #3 Buck and got them before. Close range, inside 30yrds works. I see there's a #4 Buck load also recently available. Saw it at Sportsman Warehouse, a Federal #4Buck Home Defense load. Never knew it ever existed.

If you do not like the fixed tube you can opt to send it into someone like carlson chokes that can install interchangeable tubes. My dad was going to do it with his old wingmaster but decided he would just keep an eye out for another barrel instead. My brother was going to have it done to a 20ga O/U but decided that the fixed chokes worked great on dove which is why he bought it.

here is a link to carlson's
