AO vs. Side Focus ???

Is "side focus" the same thing as an Adjustable Objective - but with the thing you turn on the side rather than on the end of the scope?

Thanks!

Yep..that's a very good thing also...my Buckmaster scope with 4.5x14x40 has the side focus....I think it is THE way to go for AO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Thanks, TC!

I was looking at scopes and saw that description on the Buckmaster - that's what prompted my question.

I wonder why they don't call it "side adjustable objective"??
It seems that would be more descriptive...

I think side focus is the wave of the future and is a good thing. My reservation, is the technology up to the demand at this time. I have had three side focus scopes so far: #1 wouldn't focus (clearly) at 100 yards, #2 the focus moved with every shot and had to re-focus before each shot, #3 worked fine for about 200 rounds with a 6mm then something snapped and lost all focus. I won't mention the 3 different brand names because it might just be my bad luck. In use they were very handy with the knob on the size but I thought they were more sensitive to focus then the objective focus.

so far the only company that has gone down the toilet over the side focus was springfield armory. and i'm not totally sure it was the side focus that did them in.

they put out one heck of a sniper scope at one time, but it had toooo many bells and whistles. they just did not hold up. i only had the pleasure of looking through one and it's optics were great. i started saving my pennies but before i could get enough saved they quit making the scope. darn, it came complete with everthing but a cook stove.

i to think side focus is the berries. even the lesser name companies are coming out with side focus scopes.

All I could do was shake my head /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif .....

I stopped by Bass Pro Shops this afternoon to take a look at scopes. In particular, I wanted to see the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 Side Focus with Mil Dot.....

And what do they print on the side of the "focus" knob? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Why "AO" of course!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I guess "Side Adjustable Objective" is just too many words for the great minds in their Marketing and Advertising Departments!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I put one of those same scopes on my Encore 25-06...have not shot it much at all yet but it sure is some of the nicest glass I own for sure.

It's a gimmick if your are shooting off the bench all your rounds are going to be at one range. If you're hunting you don't have time to be fooling around adjusting your AO with a rare exception of a animal a long distance that doesn't know your there i.e. 400 to 500 yards. That's been my experience in 37 + years of hunting. I might use it in the instance of PD shooting.
