AR barrel contours

Hey guys, I am looking at building my first AR, but am getting hung up on the barrel contour that I would want. Does anyone know of a resource that would show the various barrel contours with barrel diameter dimensions? Thanks.

Here you go:

AR Barrel Contours

Faxon Pencil Barrel

I will second the Faxon barrels. I just built an upper using the Faxon 16 inch pencil barrel. At 1.2 lbs these are amazingly light weight. I went into the build with the expectation that accuracy would be somewhat degraded due to the ultralight profile. Nope. I haven't even bothered to work up loads for it and I am getting 5 shot 1 MOA groups at 100 yards using Nosler 64 BSB bullets, Remington twice fired brass, CCI 41 primers and 26.7 grains of CFE. For what I paid I wasn't expecting a barrel this nice.

Agreed. If you want a lightweight barrel that doesn't break the bank and is accurate,Faxon Barrels are a solid choice. They don't do a lot of the varmint profile type stuff, but offer a lot of options in lighter weight profiles.

Don't get too caught up on what barrels look like - half or more of it will be covered up by your handguard. Focus on how they balance.

I tend to prefer a ~1" diameter under the handguard, finished with a 0.750" gas block and muzzle. That puts the weight where it should be for me, without adding too much weight towards the muzzle.

The Blackhole Weaponry National Match barrel profile matches my desire for balance. Essentially, it's an "HBAR" style - heavy under the handguard, light up front.

personally i'm more of a fan of heavier profile barrels. for me having some extra weight out front helps me steady the rifle better. i dont do a lot of stalking type hunting though, so a long walk for me with one of my guns is maybe a half mile to mile at most.

at those kinds of distances even a 10 lb ar308 or full bull barrel 24" varmint upper ar15 isnt unmanageable though.

most of my hunting is done in blinds, and the majority of the rest of my shooting is done from a bench or other supported position.

if i were to be doing a lot of walking i'd probably look for a much lighter profile setup.

i guess what i'm suggesting is you consider the intended use of the gun as much as cosmetics when considering what profile is right for you
