looking into building an ar but need some help not knowing much about them, other than hearing they a easy to assembel.
now im looking to build a light quick handling ar in eather 204 or 223, need to be pointed in the right direction as to where to get componits to make a resonabley priced ar also whare to get directions and get a build sheet togather thanks for your help

been going back and forth from the AR site and see all the build info but still dont know what the heck im looking at? need sugestions what uppers and lowers barrel length thinking somthing like 18inch, and this will be used for yote hunting. also see there is a lot of used stuff for sale on the site also and if i did buy some used items what to look out for as from a worn out stand point

rwire125, I'd go with a .223 for the first one as you specified "light quick handling ar", simply for the reason that you can use a shorter, light weight configuration in the barrel and hand guards. Also, in the case you decide down the line that you just don't like the AR platform, it will be easier to sell. Look at the M4 Carbine configuration.

I've had five at one time (4 .223s and one .204) in different configurations and am down to three now.

You will find that to maximize the velocity/accuracy out of the .204, you will need a minimum of a 22" barrel and if you are really interested in repeatable accuracy it will be a heavier configuration. While the barrel can be fluted to reduce some weight, it will still be heavier that the shorter M4 carbine configuration.

M4 with 14.5" barrel and muzzle brake/flash hider to keep it within legal guidelines (16")

While you may not think the weight difference is much, after carrying one all day in the brush, you will appreciate the difference in total..

You don't indicate whether you reload or not, but if not, the price of ammunition has taken some unhealthy jumps recently and the .223 ammo is still cheaper to buy than the .204 if you look at any quantity..

ok as far as the 204 goes i want to keep barrel lenght around 18inch so sounds like 223 would be the way to go, and this woukd be a carry rifle

I seriously considered putting an 18" barrel with a 1/8 twist and a light weight configuration on my M4 for better accuracy, at longer distances... It had a 1/7 twist and required the use of the heavier bullets.

That would have allowed me to eliminate the muzzle brake and give me a longer sight radius as the additional handguard length/weight would have been insignificant.

I may, in the future, build another one for my "Dream AR"...but right now, I have three that work well for my needs and purposes..

What barrel weight/contour and muzzle dia. are you looking at.
