AR build??

I am thinking about putting together an AR and I was wondering if you could put together a nice lower what would you buy or put together and what is the best way to do it to make it affordable? I was thinking about buying a couple uppers after I built a lower. My only experience with AR's is from the military.

Last year I did what you're asking about. I built a lower planning to just buy uppers from then on. What I quickly learned is the lower receiver and the upper receiver will not always match and in my case the two half's were so far on the opposite ends of "spec" they wouldn't go together. From now on I will buy matched sets only. I'm sure others opinions will vary but I'm just talking from my personal experience.

If the receivers are mil-spec, they should mate no problem, especially if they are from a reputable manufacturer. I have had only one issue with mating an upper to a known good lower and it was a Model 1, it also had issues on a couple of other lowers.

I have never had an issue with Aero Precision stripped receivers, all I will use. I have never had an issue with BCM, Spikes, Stag, Seekins, DPMS or Black Rain, although I only have limited experience with the latter.

I agree AERO PRECISION makes a great upper and lower and if you buy direct from them you can save money buying a matched set. The fit and finish is great and they also offer cerakote finish on them.

Whatever you decide on build vs buy, check prices at joboboutfitters.com for individual parts and prices.
Very reputable business with great customer service.
I recently put together a lower using a Spike`s lower.
You can get a parts kit for the lower, minus the trigger group and upgrade to RRA 2 stage for a much better than factory trigger.
It had been a long time since I put my first one together, so I had to revisit the how to videos at Brownell`s
My only regret was not getting a Hogue Grip when I purchased the other parts, but IIRC, they may have been out of stock.
I picked up a Blackhawk brand grip on clearance at wallmart but it didn`t fit (too tight, even after filing a little on the plastic).

I have always had great luck with uppers and lowers from Palmetto State Armory. If you keep an eye on it you can usually find the stuff you need on sale at some point during the month. They are miserably slow shipping though, so if you order from them, don't be surprised if it takes 3 weeks to receive the parts.

Palmetto State Armory makes quality, affordable products. nuff said.
