AR - Changing Uppers

I will shortly (in the next 6 months or so, before the election) being looking to get my first AR, and have had a hard time deciding on the .223 or .204. Im getting both, but when I say both I mean both uppers. I am not experienced in any sort of gunsmithing, i even go to a gunsmith to get my trigger adjusted. How hard for me would it be to learn how to change the uppers out when I wanted to have one caliber or the other? Also, I assume I would just mount a scope on each of them and it would stay true changing them back and forth, correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I blame this forum for the fascination I have for these guns now....Can't wait to get them.

Its a matter of pulling out two pins to remove one upper then pushing those same to pins back in to install the other upper (extreamly easy). Yes, your scopes will stay true as well.

EASY isn't even the word for it. Probably one of the most simple changes you can make to any gun. Literally 20 seconds and they can be interchanged and accuracy will not change.

Just make sure that if you are trying to mate a Colt to a non-Colt receiver (upper to lower or vice versa), you understand that you MAY need a special front pin. Besides that, super easy...

If you're not in a real big hurry, check out ar15.com. Here's a link to a super buy in a "used" AR. You can add a quality 204 upper at a later date, then you'll have a 223 plinker and a 204 tack driver for a reasonable price.

Bargin bin rifles

I got in a hurry and it cost me about $200 more than waiting a couple weeks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You don't even pull the pins out they are captive just push them to the right rear first, remove the bolt and charging handle then, push the front pin over to the right then the upper comes off. Reinstall in reverse order

Just be sure the bolt carrier is in the full forward (in battery) position. Removing the bolt carrier and charging handle is optional also but not really neccessary. Don't let the upper drop on yer toes......don't ask me how I know that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
