I recently bought an Oly AR. I want to paint the stock and fore arm on the gun. How do I go about taking off the rear stock and what can I expect after I take the butplate off? Thanks.
The only advice I can give is take a good look at a schematic and locate the detent spring and understand where it's located. Taking off the buttplate isn't too exciting, but when you pull the buttstock away from the reciever, that detent spring will fly off if you're not careful. It's a little bugger and if it flies, you're chances of finding it will be slim to none.

If it's an A2 stock just remove the top screw of the butplate. The stock will slide off of the extension tube. Watch for the spring, slide it off slowly and you'll be fine. If the screw is tight, try a square shaft screwdriver and get a cresent wrench on the shaft for a little leverage. If it's an M4 stock you will need a spanner wrench.
They usually use somekind of threadlocker on it so you need a good fitting big screwdriver with a wrench flat to get some leverage. An impact driver might work to break it loose.
