AR/Service Rifle Match's........?

They are starting near my location this summer and it looks fun.

I have been looking at A4 flat top type set ups(CMP allows now). The front sight has to be fixed issue type and can not go on a rail. Hand guards etc, need to be as Mil. type.

The rifle would also be used for Woodchucks and distance shooting with a HP scope.

Question: With the carry handle off and a 40mm abjective scope mounted on the rail. The scope has to be mounted high enough to clear vision on the front sight. I am used to bolt actions which have more drop in the stock. The A2 stock just comes straight off. How is the cheek weld for an average person on the A4 flat top with a 40mm scope? It appears with that type straight off the action stock cheek weld may still be decent?

Thoughts?

Thanks

Well I got my answer via D-Tech. You can look right through it un-seen as with a small front sight. I am just not used to dealing with such a large frame on a front sight.

Because there is no drop in the stock, they do mount the scopes up and have good cheek weld still also........apparently.

On my Bushmaster flat-top, I first mounted a Leupold 2.5x20mm scope to quickly try it out. The front sight blurred my view through that scope. Also, I was using low rings. After asking here, I learned the front sight would have no effect on higher power scopes. I cannot remember the terminology or specifics, but I am glad you received a good answer from D-Tech.

I now use high rings and a 4-12x40mm with no problems. I have not tried a 3-9x yet and wonder if it would blur my view at 3x. I might check.

BTW - my Bushmaster has a 16" barrel.

How is your cheek weld?

Anyone shooting service rifle or other matches with AR's?

I have shot one 600 yard match so far and although I did not win (you should see some of these guys shoot open sights) I was not dead last either. I shot my AR in service rifle and my 1903a3 in the open class. It was a hoot and I actually shot better with the 1903 than the AR. You definately have to spend some time figuring out the sight settings and windage, check your ego at the door and have fun. It is competitive at the top ranks but everyone is very helpful to the novices.

The Marines have a little green booklet (or used to) they use for shooting that includes a lot of info on shooting in the wind..... great little range assistant. Goes right to the "how many clicks" per x-much wind. Also tells you how to read the range flags, etc.

In the lower classifications high power competition is very friendly. Most everybody does everything possible to help new shooters or even mid level shooters.
High power is definitely more friendly than other competitions. I suspect one reason being that the prize money is not much compared to many other competitions.

Thanks for the help all. From what I can tell the local matches will be “informal” and it just states “service rifle, open sights, etc.” And states the ranges which go out to 600 yards. It was posted at a rim fire club. I am just thankful that there is some type of center firs rifle shoot around here now. I think “a hoot” is a good way to describe these. I am just looking for an affordable, informal place to drink coffee, swap stories , talk guns and shoot………….same interest.

I wish I had looked into AR’s earlier because I like what I see now in terms of non expensive shoots with similar non expensive (as compared to custom BR) rifles and ammo that also function as varmint/predator rifles. I hope the liberals do not ruin this some day. They seem to be the 10/22’s of center fire for the hobiest and I have been looking into assembling one just for enjoyment. Previously in my area besides major trap, skeet & clays. It was mostly rim fire rifle or pistol. Seems the service rifle shoots interest is growing here.

Also for my area. There is a 1000 yard range a 1 ½ south in Pa. that has weekly “informal” shoots along with some highly published National matches a couple times per year. I spoke with a gun smith here who builds custom 1000 yard rifles. I was pleased to find out that there is a growing group of local shooters meeting at a coffee shop once per week during summer and driving down for informal shoots……………..fun. They are shooting AR’s some scoped and bench some iron/open sights at 300, 600 and 1000 for fun. He says “it’s a hoot”. Again apparently this is because of the interest in AR’s, accessories and kits for them, low shooting cost, military background experience in some cases etc.

I am glad to see this happening in my area as it allows a family man on a budget to shoot with others of similar interest. I guess our area is a little slow as it’s just catching on here. I am going to likely assemble a striped lower. Not sure on the upper. I may just get an upper from DTech or I may fiddle with that also. I am thinking along the lines of a 20” stainless heavy barrel with a 1-8 twist in a flat top and putting a good trigger in it, maybe even a Jewel or at least the best I can afford. Something that can lob the higher BC’s out there well. I will use it with a bi-pod for woodchucks also.

Appreciate your thoughts. I have found the AR-15 board and its exchange forum.

Thanks, enjoy the outdoors.
